Underground - Mainstream - Major - Independant

Postby ,-,'-{Bar}-',-, » Nov 3rd, '07, 18:53

im hoping this should be a good discussion

so what do you think about the difference of underground, mainstream, major and independant ?

i think there shouldnt be this labelling, like jin sayed "wack is wack wether mainstream or backpack"

although you have alot of people who are what they call "underground heads" and hate maintstream music, so if there favourite artist got a major label deal should they dislike them for being mainstream ?

alot of people say people who sign big deals with major labels are "selling out" but how can trying to get your music broadcast to a bigger audeince being classed as selling out ?

discuss, what do you think about this sort of thing ?

I think the difference between underground and publicity is basically labels and publicity, i dont think immortal technique is completely underground now.. kus alot of ppl noe his shit.. but someone like (an underground artist, minds blank ride now, is considered underground kus he or shes not popular and not getting paid alot for his music, theres not that big a fine line but there is a line.i think as soon as a persons video gets on Bet even for one day his underground status is gone.

I think that the only real difference in mainstream and underground is just how many people know the artist. Like I wouldn't consider.... say Tech N9ne truly underground as he got thousands of fans everywhere.

The artists without enough exposure to get them noticed outside of their city, county, or whatever would be truly underground imo.

And being on an independent label doesn't necessarily mean you're underground, since a lot of the more popular rappers are on independently formed labels, at least from what I've seen.

And yeah, there shouldn't really be the distinction of talent based on underground/mainstream status. Like, Eminem was good when underground/independent, and still was once he hit it big. Soulja Boy was shit when unknown, and still is.

probably almost every mainstream rapper was underground once. i mean before they dropped those multi-platinum albums and became world-wide known artists, so hating them just because they made it to the game is quite pointless.

it's true that some of the mainstream artists sell shit, but there are also artists who keep it alive and thank God for them, it's probably the same in underground. shit is shit, no matter where rofl

i've heard [or maybe read, don't remember] someone said that the difference between underground and mainstream is lyrics. this killed me. i don't really consider Talib as deep underground [more like the suburbs of the mainstream lmao :p ] but he can really make a song about women, sex and smoking weed and still keep it classic.

Its basicallly what we expect from the Mainstream and Underground

Whatever mainstream shit rappers put out only help enforce the stereotype of theres no creativity/talent in the game so we think of underground mc's are better (99% are:fact)

but it'd be nice for there to be a balance between the two (but im fucking dreaming)

Well, for me, alot of Mainstream is like a get rich quick scheme that can be clearly seen. But that "wack is wack" shit is true. I fuckin' hate Southern rap because the white kids (no offence to anyone) at my school think that all black people use the slang that Southerners use, and whenever they hear T.I. on a record saying "mane" (as in Gucci Mane, pronounced as "main", means "man"), they tend to inadvertly joke around about ebonic language using the word. And I tell them that the word they are using is Southern, not ebonics. "Wack is wack"= and that shit is true for Underground Hip-Hop too. I dislike Witchdoctor because of his delivery, being from the south and all that.
