Rich Rappers

Postby James R. » Nov 20th, '08, 19:49

So I just watched an episode of Run's House (I know.... stfu) because I wanted to see Team Blackout's little concert thing. I've never heard anything by them, and past the show, about them so I was curious. They obviously suck. All they talk about it fly ass cars and clothes and shit like that. Now that's kind of the theme of hip-hop. Going from the struggle to the American Dream, but it felt wrong when they rapped it. Maybe I'm discriminating, but it seems to me that half of rap is about the struggle. That's what makes it so easy to relate to. I don't see very many rappers out there who were rich before they even started rapping, and you rarely hear about any famous rapper's kid becoming a famous rapper, it just doesn't seem to happen like that. What do you guy think people who already have financial security and prosperity rapping about the same old hip-hop ish? Can they infiltrate rap or is it reserved for those who had to fight for their chance with every ounce of soul they had?

I hear you on that shit. I think they infultrate it when they come in already loaded and talk that shit, that's shit's so played out, but peoples struggles are all different, so anyone talking it is on their own thing.

Personally I prefer this kind of rap, about struggle and trying to make it through the next day. Of course, it all depends on the way they deliver it, because.. for example Talib or any other of the so called conscious rappers - they talk about normal life and struggle and it sounds right. For me - they're way better than any of the rappers like 50 Cent - all they can rap about is fly clothes, cars and bitches. I hate it, it seems so shallow to me. On the other hand we got Nas, who bitches about how hard life is, when we all know his life's waaaay easier than any of us, he ain't gotta think about tomorrow and how to make it till the end of the month..
I like to listen to songs I can somehow relate to. I'm not saying I'm from the lower class or something, it's just that I'm a regular citizen and I know how it looks like. I don't know how it feels to have six or seven digits on your bank account. I have no idea how it looks to 'pull mad bitches in the bar'. I can't relate to smoking weed in Amsterdam, but Yayo obviously can. Doesn't change the fact that he sucks lol.
Anyway, I think they have right to rap about the struggle. It gives hope to many people and upcoming rappers, that there's actually a chance. On the other hand, you can't only rely on others' example and you have to find your way in life. So you gotta find a balance between rapping about struggle and being a hypocritical bitch.

No shit. Why do you think Encore sucked so bad?

Eminem couldn't rap about being broke no more, he also couldn't rap about coke no more.

Although most people relate through struggle of life because hip-hop was born in the streets, at the end of the day, it's the content that matters to me

To me it's always been Everyday Struggle and not I'm Rich as Fuck. For some rappers in a way it must be hard then to relate to Everyday Struggle since they are rich as fuck so they're like celebrating their money.

That's why I thought Biggie did pretty well on Life After Death since he himself said that he couldn't talk about being broke no more so he talked about other things. It was more Mafioso Rap.
