Explain "good content"

Postby electroencephalogram » Dec 19th, '09, 00:20

Most people seem to agree that songs that are personal and relatable are better than those that are fictional.

Why?

Music is entertainment, how come people look at music differently than other forms of entertainment? For example, people want songs to be real, however, with movies and TV it's the opposite. Most peoples' favorite movies are completely fictional. People don't hate on Pulp Fiction, Toy Story, or Silence of the Lambs even though they are made up stories.

Another thing, my favorite show is Dexter. Is Michael C. Hall (plays Dexter) "fake" because he's not actually a serial killer in real life? And that goes on to another topic about people needing their favorite artist to have credentials rather than just judging the art on its own basis. Like how artists are judged on their looks, personality, and history sometimes more so than the art they create (ie. Drake, Rick Ross, Kanye). But that goes beyond this.

So is better content having stories about true life? If that's the case then why don't you only watch real life documentaries on the History Channel?

Your thoughts are welcome

It's all relative. Personally, I phase in and out of 'favorite's. Maybe one month I'll really focus on the personal, emotional content; and the next I'll be really focused on the lyrical slaughter.

Eminem is a phenominal rapper, there is no question about that. But because he's been in the game for so long, he really has had to pretty much touch on almost every subject to stay as original as possible, meaning that some people will really enjoy it - and others don't.

So I find that he puts a bit of everything into his albums, which I think is great.

I don't like songs that always speak from the heart too rashly.

Occasionally, I like to spice things up a bit with a more realistic, down-to-earth kind of song, or just a lyrical track that gets teared up. :y:
Yo, from the first to the last of it; delivery is passionate/
The whole and not the half of it; vocab and not the math of it/
Projectile that them blasted with; accurate assassin shit/
Me and Kweli close like... Bethlehem and Nazareth/

It really depends on my mood. Sometimes I enjoy a real emotional sond and sometimes fictional. And I understand when people say that they like more realistic songs, its obvious and totally normal.

But Im strongly against people sayin that we dont need fictional songs.
For example, this rapper Marchelo. In his first album, he rapped mostly down-to-earth underground. But in his 2nd and 3rd album...The best songs on those were marvelous fictional storytellings. So people started wonderin (and complainin), why did he switch style? Why did he go from rappin mostly about his life to fiction rap? So he provided them with an answer, in his song Someone Third. I'll translate it to English, but obviously it wont rhyme.

Im storytelling rappin about strange things, deep things
Pullin unreal characters outta my head and makin them real
Always with a reason, never without a message
Honesty and dedication, only difference is that Im not the main actor
And thats the problem, that you're missin a very important detail
That a man can be honest eventhough he's not personal
That a man can be honest eventhough he's not like you
Better ask yourself, why are you listenin to songs about yourself

As for the serial killing concept, thats another story....
