Nas' Dance > Tupac's Dear Mama

Postby mcZu » Jan 5th, '11, 21:47

I know both songs come from a different perspective, but both revolve around the same concept. However, in my humble opinion, Nas' Dance captures so much more emotion than Tupac's Dear Mama. And Dance has a much better beat than Dear Mama, the sample in Dance is beautiful (Cheb Khaled - Aicha), and Nas' lyrics put you in a state of vicarious arousal: he makes you feel what he's going through at the moment when he recorded the song. Beautiful display of lyricism, lyricism at its finest. Great, great, great song.

I mean, in lyricism Pac don't stand a chance in front of Nas.....But these type songs don't have to be lyrical.
Both songs are classics but i prefer Pac's Dear Mama, you'd understand it if you've lived it (the whole thing about moms and how great they are).

You're making it sound as if Nas' song doesn't touch upon the whole thing about moms. There is no better song that makes you appreciate the value of your mother more than Dance. Because Nas raps about the death of his mother, there is nothing more touching than that. And, yes, I judge it on its lyrics. Because conveying emotion on these kind of tracks is part of lyricism. Nobody said Dear Mama isn't good, it's a great song. But it just doesn't touch the level of Dance. We all relate to Dear Mama, everyone lives that, except for the exceptions of people growing up without a mother. But Dance brings it to a newer, higher level.

Dance may be the more emotional song because it's about the death of his mother, while dear mother is just about his mother.

Because Tupac made a song about his love for his mother while she was still alive makes the song equally beautiful to me. Plus, at some parts in the song tupac sounds like he's gonna break down and cry, those little parts of emotion make the song what it is.

Agreed.

I'm a bigger Nas fan than I am of Tupac, but in my opinion "Dear Mama' is the better song. In fact, I rate it as one of the greatest songs ever written.

There's so many similarities between Nas and Tupac it's eery. It's sad they never recorded. One of the greatest shames in music history.

Dear Mama. Both are great though. Not to put down Nas, but is it surprising that an artist of Nas's talent write a great song like Dance after his mother's passing, not really. But when Dear Mama came out, rap at that time was about being as hard as you could, it was about that gangsta shit, it was not about writing hearfelt love songs for your mother.
