Make your own label

Postby FreeSpeech » Mar 26th, '11, 19:27

Rules: 7 artists, preferably 1 or 2 non-rappers
Goal: Have a label that will be succesful for a while. So it's probably not a good idea to fill it with a bunch of geezers, knaw'mean?
Include a short explanation of why you picked each artist. Judge them on what you think they can do, not what they have done. I'd love a GRODT 50, but not a BISD 50. Try to have a coherent label. I love DZK and Cudi, but I wouldn't put them on a label together. And don't just make an All Star lineup, like Eminem, Nas, Jay-Z, etc. We know that wouldn't happen or work.

MY TEAM
Kanye West: Every album is golden, plus he'd be our main beatmaker :flutter:

J Cole: The lyrical dude on my label, hopefully with Yeezy beats he could be the next superstar.

Kid Cudi: Good albums, and he will provide unique, unduplicated hooks.

Drake: Take him out of YM and he will greatly improve lyrically. Plus he can lay some good hooks and he will be our 'pop' rapper. All he needs is better production and to utilize his lyrical abilities and he's incredibly dope.

Ryan Leslie: Very dope producer, and makes good R&B/pop songs too.

Lady GaGa: I'm a fan, and I've always wanted her to do more hiphop songs. Give her Yeezy and RLes production, and damn. Plus she would bring instant hype to any song she's on.

Tyler, The Creator: Less mainstream, but he can definitely make it big. He has the most potential out of OFWGKTA and he is a very good producer. I think his style would compliment Kanye's. I can see him and J Cole making great tracks together. Basically, I want him because I'm so excited to see what he can do and I wouldn't want to sleep on him.

Good topic. I wouldn't be aiming to be widely successful but I'm trying to atleast make a mainstream impact and make a lyrical Roc Nation/GOOD Music hybrid.
My Team

J. Cole: His first single needs to not suck. Alot of potential in this guy. Out of everyone here he probably has the most mainstream appeal other than Kanye & the hook-singer so we'll exploit that and turn him into Carolina's Drake (except way better).

Blu: Same basis as J. Cole except he's way way better.

Lupe Fiasco: Already a talented, established artist who's doing moderately well for himself. His fanbase will migrate to the rest of the label.

Kanye West: The Producer and the backbone of it all. He is the Dre to our NWA. Thing is that he'll stick to producing and do a couple feats for promotion of the new artists.

Bruno Mars: The hook-singer. Every single 1st single from ANY of them will have this guy on it.

Wax: Like someone said in another topic, I would turn him into the white B.o.B tbh. Dude can sing very well and play the guitar, not to mention he completely DESTROYS verses but ya know..

and finally....

Sentus: I would force him to dumb it down a bit while still staying moderately lyrical and also spit on soulful, jazzy beats. Then I would slap on some auto tune and make him sing some sick choruses. From now on he's making "feel good" music :smoking:

Revolutionary wrote:Eminem : Well...We all know he's the GOAT (Mainstream wise).

Nas : He's arguably in my top 5 dead or alive.

Hopsin : He's got great potential and if he collaboed with Em they wouldn't even have to get to know each other because Hops is SSLP's Eminem (Content wise).

Tech N9ne : He's one of the GOATS no doubt...He's very successful and can put on an amazing show.

Chamillionaire : He's a great lyricist and very successful..We all know how much he sold when he got his chance.

J. Cole : Him and Nas can maybe make the best song of all time...He's so great and got potential.

John Mayer : I don't listen to his music (i don't listen to anything other than Rap). But my friend was playing his music the other day and i kinda liked it...He's got a good voice and he writes his music.

See man, I like all those dudes, but that label isn't coherent at all. This isn't about who you like, but how to make a good label. This one is straight up random. John Mayer on a label with Nina? Really? I'm not trying to be a dick or insulting, I just think you missed the point a lil. It's all good tho, thanks for contributing :y:

Toksick: Maybe not the MOST intelligent choice business-wise.. but I mean how can I not.. haha. Anyway, since I'm also running the label I won't count this.

Eminem: Obviously a legendary rapper can't hurt. As long as Wayne doesn't do 800k (which he won't), Em is the top-selling rapper currently, and of all time. Not to mention from a purely skill standpoint. Plus, Em is a great producer and I could learn a lot from him with both production and vocals.

Drake: Another big-seller currently.. Plus he can sing. He can drop a few hooks and for the first few years a solo-album. After those 2-3 albums though, his success will die down. More of a temporary position. Wouldn't sign him beyond that point.

Wiz Khalifa: A younger and more mainstream artist... Also can make some solid hooks. Again this is a more temporary signing because I don't think he will be doing numbers 5 years from now.

Slaughterhouse: Gotta love cheating the system to get 4 more sick emcees.. Slim will be very comfortable working with them, and I feel like they could destroy some of his beats. Not a huge seller right out the door, but they will be when hip hop cycles back in about 3-5 years.

Pink: A big-selling pop-rock artist for one thing.. but for another I can see her doing way better work with myself or Em than what happened with "Won't Back Down" Plus her solo career is still thriving.

Wiz, Cudi and J. Cole to sell, and Wiz & Cudi can deliver incredible choruses.

Paz, Nas, AOTP, and Em to bring lyricism and respect.

Premo and West to deliver the beats.

Im not sure if this is a very coherent list but I really don't care

Kanye West (like Freespeech said he will pretty much make everyone's beats)
Lupe Fiasco (the one that is capable of making the next classic album)
Common (I don't know why but I think he just fits)
B.o.B (a fresh face and will only get better)
Nikki Jean ( She has great chemistry with Lupe and her hooks are just :worship: )
Kid Cudi (would sing hooks)
Tech Ni9e (he is a rising start and continues to make conssistenly dope albums)

It's real coherent, minus Tech N9ne haha. Very similar to mine actually, I was contemplating putting B.o.B., Lupe and Common on.

First single: Sentus feat. Bruno Mars & Lupe Fiasco (Prod. By Kanye West)? :o

Producers:
Wax Tailor, he's a french DJ, he's awesome.
DJ Shadow
DJ Krush
^ Krush collaborated with Aesop Rock and it sounded great, I wish Shadow did that too and collaborated with rappers.. Anyways, they're both geniuses and I'd love to have them even as producers only. Trip hop is just great for chillin out, so I really wouldn't mind having them.. :flutter:

As for the rappers.. Probably Talib Kweli and Nas for sure, also Prozak because I'm pretty sure he'd sound dope on some Shadow/Krush production. Q-Tip for some old-school rhymin, I think he'd go well with Wax Tailor and.. well, I'd need one female vocalist, maybe Charlotte Savary, she works with Tailor often or Mary J. Blige..

I was also thinkin of Will.I.Am, cause he's both producer, rapper and a singer.. shiiiiit, I hate making decisions. :'(
