Rappers who got better later in their career

Postby dead prez » Dec 12th, '13, 04:34

I don't just mean after their 2nd and third record and than immediately plummeted, but where it was a long drawn out process of over 10 years at least.

Black Thought from the roots is the first one that comes to mind, it wasn't until the 00s where his flow started rly getting fluid and his voice became more distinct rather than sounding like every other 90s east coast rappers (he was great in Illadelph btw).

His best record is Game Theory but still got progressively better in Rising Down and How I got Over only thing is guests ruin the potential of his albums. Which is why game theory is the best roots record as it's the closest to a black thought solo.

Not to mention he's been killing guest features recently

And El-P I guess both as a producer and rapper though, my favorite record of his is Funcrusher Plus.

this is a good question,

Maybe Tech N9ne, But im not sure

The grand majority of rappers get worse later in their career so its hard to pick up one. Also depends what do you mean by "later".

But yeah

I guess progressively getting better, but not like during their second or third album but it being a process. Like they have to be a veteran almost, like I wouldn't consider Kendrick yet till he drops a few more albums basically but if he keeps up this pace than he'd be there.

Also showing artistic progression and not just getting more "skilled" counts.

soz for sleeping on this brother

i'd agree with tech n9ne definitely (altho i dont rate him that much) but for what he does he definitely has improved

ummmmm

all artists seem to have their peaks tho

like improve then drop off

my answer would have to be masta ace. Disposable Arts and Long Hot Summer shit so hard on his older (younger) stuff.

i think slug, but some people (bizarrely) would disagree, as they dont like the feminine sounding lemons lol

slug and kanye have been pretty consistent to me in terms of highs, like lemons is a better album, but anywhere in his discog u culd gets goat candidates, so i dunno

dont know them well enough, but i weirdly like In Rainbows, which is very late on.

Accor, horsebot or mononym might be better suited to tackle that one tho
