You're not listening to rappers freestyle in a corner cypher, you're listening to their music so their skills as an emcee is pointless if it can't translate into quality material. It's like trying to argue Brandon Jennings is better than Tim Duncan because he has more basketball skills and can show off more in a one on one game. It doesn't translate into what matters.

Since you used the example, I don't see any possible reason why we couldn't have a discussion on who the best NBA player is on particular individual skillsets alone. We compare 3s, mid-range, ball handling, post moves..etc. He might not be the best teammate (looking at you, Carmelo), and might not have the most rings, but does that mean we can't make a list of best scorers? Sure, you could say, "it's so fucking stupid to compare offensive abilities. It makes no sense. You're not just playing 1 on 1. There's more to basketball than those statistics". Okay......but why the hell can't I have a conversation about that particular skill?

Apparently every time you rank rappers it can't just be about one thing. If every time I wanted to rank NBA players I had to only rank them overall, ok. Jordan wins. Cool. It doesn't matter if other people want to talk about a particular set of skills. They can fuck off. Jordan wins overall. Every other comparison is bullshit. It's fucking stupid to talk about a particular set of skills.

Nah Lebron would win.

But nothing you said there is even close to what I was saying…It says top 25 Emcees Of All Time and apparently you decided to vote based on their skills as a rapper. Your comparison doesn't work because Aone never said make your list based off rhyming abilities or flow or punchlines. You just decided skills as a rapper and everyone jumped on the technical bandwagon and decided that was the end all be all. Entertainment value, creativity, uniqueness, personality, execution, replay ability, etc are all skills that are just as important as technical skills and are a lot more impressive and difficult to attain.

People that say "oh har had well I like Kanye more as an artist but Crooked I is the better rapper…" just sound so ignorant.

Big Pun is actually gud tho...

list needs El-P, Killer Mike, Vordul Mega (his performance on Cold Vein>>), Cam'ron, Bun B, and buttloads more. Oh and Black Thought should be number one.

For some reason I've had an urge the past month or two to just go through and listen to all the classic southern albums.

In addition to the artists everyone has mentioned, I think 8Ball & MJG and Three 6 deserve a mention

But I also agree with painkiller that Outkast stands alone on a pedestal compared to the rest of southern hip-hop

More people need to check out Devin The Dude.
His album "Just Tryna Live" is a personal favourite of mine, it's got ill beats, nice melodies and great storytelling.
In fact the only OutKast album on it's level in my opinion is "Aquemini".
