I mean, I love Kanye's album too but Em touches on more in more intelligent ways in the span of one verse than Kanye or others do for an entire album. Yet they praise Ye for the odd line as if it's an album's worth of lyrical genius or major step forward.

That's not just unfair to Em, but to all decent mainstream rappers.

However, he is the Gaga of the hip hop universe. Everybody loves his shit!

Yeah but my point was also that, they seem to hold Em to a higher lyrical standard. Which, in a weird way is kind of right given that's his forte but if it's supposed to be unbias, objective examining then it's unfair.

I don't mean they just overpraise Kanye and nobody else, I also mean... With most other good lyrical rappers - They seem to get their due for the most part. But Em has set such a bar that it's like... Anything less than the most mind-blowing formulations of ideas ever layed to record is not only not good enough but gets panned.

Then you see other rappers and Kanye in particular, getting highly praised for much less innovative lyricism. I've never seen another rapper or lyricist for that matter get AS deeply debated (when good) as Eminem. I remember when he came back in Oct 08 and his 'Relapse freestyle' was being examined line for line in national newspapers lmao.

Which is just insane. A two minute freestyle verse getting examined that way.

Which in way, speaks volumes for the expectations and past quality of what he can do with the pen. But it's also a cacth-22 and the source of some critical misjustice as he's held to such a high standard that even 'excellent' lyricism is seen as failure because it's not totally groundbreaking. Then much lesser lyricism by others is praised as fantastic.

Which may be... arguably fair in an artistic sense. ie. the fans should expect that, but it's not fair in a critical sense, it's bad criticism. It's bias. For better or worse.

I haven't heard his new album, don't really care to either, but I agree with embase and especially on the point of em being held to such a high standard. I'd like to add that most critics probably put in less effort when they review his albums now, for the simple fact that they know he will sell and their review means less for him than it would for other artists that they review.

^ Well what you said about them putting in less-time, I'd say (from what I've read) is certainly true. It's almost like a lot are annoyed that he's still successful lmao.

Because many people mistook him (and still mistake him) for a shock-artist. As if he always had a timer on his success due to it being based on the factor of shock.

Now, shock has been an element but he was never a shock artist and the people who always got his music always knew that. It was never for its own sake, it wasn't aimless provocation, it was reaction. And regardless of how long he flogs dead horses, it's still a reaction.

Plus the fact there's so many shades to his sphere. They often like to try and characterize artists in a sentance or two but somebody like Eminem is far too complex to do that with.

And I've seen evidence of what you said in Recovery reviews. For example I remember many critics saying "25 to Life" was 'yet ANOTHER' Kim track etc. And then going into a rant about how redundant that whole game is. Which is just hilarious as their analysis is SO arrogant and pompous, yet they've misunderstood the premise of the tracks they're panning.

And it's not even difficult to understand either. The entire concept of that track makes clear, logical sense with a single line at the end.

So that's proof they weren't properly listening. Or proof that they heard it but are too fucking dumb to realize the significance. Tomato / Tomäto.

The fuck :o , they hate Em because of controversy though....MBDTF is not controversial, which is many times mistaken with conversational. When its talked about DOESNT mean that its controversial. Just cause you put out a 40 minute video doesnt mean you defy society like MMLP did
