Just pre-ordered MM 4.5 autographed, even though it'll probably leak within a few days.

That track sounds good.

Never checked out Budden. But man, he's done a lot of mixtapes...

I would be annoyed / paranoid that I'm wasting my best shit on mixtapes.

As I could never put out like, me at '80%' or something lmao. It'd either be all or nothing. Would wanna save it for albums. Because... by the time he gets to his next album... he's said A LOT on mixtapes now.

he's just selling the name "Mood Muzik" since people know Joe from that series...the fact that it's a mixtape doesn't mean anything...Mood Muzik 4 and 4.5 are retail albums

His mixtapes are just as good as his albums. I dont think he ever just goes 80%.

I thought you couldn't get into Joe Budden

I didn't say his mixtapes were. I'm saying... if it was me, then the material I would be putting on mixtapes would be equivalent to album material and that would make me feel like I'm wasting it.

I didn't comment on the quality of his as I haven't heard them.

But, that's my point - so he's like, practically wasting tons of album-worthy material on mixtape after mixtape. I mean, it's still being heard but, mixtapes don't go down in history or make an impact.

Are you new to music? Mixtapes do go down in history. Joe is basically known for his mixtapes. Lloyd Banks was discovered via mixtapes (as were countless others). A lot of times, the only thing separating a mixtape from an album is sample/beat clearing.

Also, why would an artist go less than 100% on the songs they write, regardless of what the song is intended for? Artists are always putting mixtapes out that are just as good, if not better than their albums.

New to music? lmao. No I'm not new to music.

Mixtapes are fairly recent in the bigger scheme of things and they most certainly don't go down in history. Artists get known through mixtapes but that's a very different thing.

When you hear people listing the greatest hip-hop albums ever, with the usual suspects (Illmatic, Ready to Die etc.) - have you ever once heard a mixtape mentioned? even in passing? I haven't.

Mixtapes aren't received on a mass-scale and are therefore not judged on a mass-scale. Mixtape material gets forgotten about. Only the fans of the artist remember it, but in terms of legacy, it doesn't get remembered. It's a waste.

And when did I say an artist should go less than 100%? please try and understand what I say before outright refuting a point I didn't make.

You said you would give 80%. To me, that implied you tought artists don't put 100% into mixtapes. This made me think you never listen to mixtapes, and were new to music.

Mixtapes aren't brought up in album discussions because they're mixtapes. The artists you gave examples of never got into mixtapes and other so called greats don't bother with mixtapes. A few years from now, mixtapes will be in the discussion.

I'm pretty sure mixtapes have been around for a while, but are more popular now given the state of the music industry. If an artist gets known via a mixtape, don't you think that mixtape will go down in that artist's history? Also, mixtapes are getting reviews in major publications, especially if the artist is well known. MM2 was reviewed in the NY Times, and I'm pretty sure I saw a Chamillionare mixtape review in last month's Rolling Stone.

Also, it can be argued that an artist's legacy is kept alive by their fans. Fans of an artist will remember all of an artist's work (mixtape, album, and other material included). Years from now, artists (especially Joe Budden) will definitely be remembered for their mixtapes and albums. In a fan's eyes, nothing is a waste.
