I believe Cole recognized he doesn't have to compromise for a few reasons. His blatant radio songs didn't play as well as he had hoped outside of Work Out. The key moment for Cole was Miss America as a single. That didn't get the exposure he hoped but it proves he isn't as conscious now about trying to make pure radio songs. Whether Kendrick had any effect on that is debatable, but id be willing to believe that since they are so close, Cole saw how successful an album could be when you didn't compromise and realized he could let the artistic juices flow.
Basically Crash said Kendrick's album selling well proved you don't have to sell out for your album to "sell out". Cole was an example of trying to compromise a bit on the first album and its reasonable to believe from the two singles so far he has changed his direction a bit. This is the stuff Cole was capable of doing to mainstream rap. This is what we've been waiting for since the kid spit on Warm Up.
