I can think of plenty of (non-rap) songs with amazing lyrics.

Bittersweet symphony
Mad world
Iris
Hallelujah
Karma Police
Imagine
Wonderwall
Mr. Brightside
Brick
Someone like you
Smells like teen spirit
Brick in the wall
Throw your arms around me
Hey Jude
Somebody that I used to know
Tiny dancer
Time of your life

That's just a few mainstream ones that everyone should know but there are a million more album tracks and b sides etc.

To say no genre other than rap focuses on lyrics is fucking bogus lol

Thanks  I'll let you know what I think.

EDIT: Hokay......

"Here we are now, entertain us
A mulatto
An albino
A mosquito
My libido"

I'm sure this has some deep meaning, but it still sounds stupid as fuck.

Yeah i think Smells like teen spirit is a perfect example of what Emineminsider was talking about. Just random lyrics to fit the music.

There is definitely some great lyricism in other genres. Stairway to Heaven is really well written. Depends on the artist I guess. Like someone said above, Bob Dylan was a terrible "technical" singer but his story telling and his sound is great.

Time to strut my #teamellie here, but Ellie Goulding has some amazing lyrics as well.

Check out "Explosions" from her album, Halcyon. It's amazing the emotion she put into her words on that song. Wow.

So does "tear this motherfucking roof off like two dogs caged", still a great song with great lyrics.

It's a simile that rhymes well and makes sense. The quote I posted, on the other hand, is pretty much random words mashed together.

The comment just sounds like a genre war when people can't appreciate the different skillset used in another genre and then define it by whatever is popular and classed as that genre because they have no idea what it really is as they don't know a genre and define it by stereotypes . Next time some casual ignorant music listener says rappers aren't talented, tell them to stop being an assuming prick and tell them to check out rappers that do. If RZA can compose for movies, learning how to read and write music, Immortal Technique can play trumpet, Plan B can play guitar, then there are rappers that are talented.

The real problem is nowadays, getting a home studio setup is possible now, it's a double-edged sword, because it allows people to put out tracks easily so it doesn't seem as skillful, which is true is some cases, but like any genre, real talent can be heard. If they still chatting shit, tell them to check out The Roots.
