It's funny at times. On the other hand, it has dated pop culture references people stopped caring about in 07, and is one of the standout tracks on Relapse, not for being one of the best, but for being randomly goofy and stupid. It's also far more immature than any "hoe bashing" Em has done in the past three years.
"Wowzers, I just made a mess in my trousers!!"
Really? You have your Relapse goggles on, bro. Take em off.
Firstly - that 'dated pop references' argument is retarded.
The 'relevancy' of Em's references, or any reference for that matter, never matters. Critics who keep banging on about him being out of date with his references... that's NOT the point of the joke or the reference and never is. If he names Kim Kardashian, or Jessica Simpson or WHOEVER, the importance is not how relevant they happen to be - those names are just short-cuts to character-types of the day and the character-types apply to multiple people - in reality he's just naming a slutty big assed pop figure, it doesn't matter what the name is, that's just a short-cut to familiarity.
So people who think the relevancy of the names is the important bit, are idiots.
He's been naming Chirstopher Reeve for 13 years, do you really think his aim is to stay relevant with who he's referring to? It's about inducing characters in to his raps and having running jokes (funny or not, the names don't matter), it's not truly about 'who's hot right now', that's such a stupid mindset.
And how is "We Made You" (beyond the video, i'm talking about the music and the lyrics) goofy?, that line you mentioned (wowzers) is jokey sarcasm, it's actually funny, and funnier than puns.
And there's some actually really good writing in WMY such as:
"You think that's bad?
You should hear the rest of my album
Never has there been such finesse and nostalgia!"
And
"The enforcer, looking for more women to torture"
His phrasing is poetic like it is throughout Relapse, it's like writers' phrasing, 'and little did I mention', sounds, well as he put it - finessed. Rather than clunky, clumsy and cringy like a lot of Recovery.
The hook is poppy yes but it's just a question of whether it's good or bad, I like the hook and don't find the beat poppy - it's kind of jazzy and bouncy, it's an actually good beat compared to that piece of shit NF beat made by a 14 year old in his bedroom with tin-can drums.
Everything about WMY you is good - the beat, the rhyming, the flow, the lyrics...
A few minor flaws such as the fart noise and the pop references - not because they're 'dated', just because they're boring and it's the same shtick. But it's a far more enjoyable piece of music, and a better made song. The video is goofy, nothing else about the song is; zany would be a better would to describe it, as are all of his first singles other than "Not Afraid", but it's solid writing.
PS. Just read your latest post... "Without Me" unfitting?... it fits perfectly on The Eminem Show, "Just Lose It" is easily the least fitting - there is some silly shit on Encore which coincides but to put out "Just Lose It" on an album with "Mosh" and "Spend Some Time" just sounds weird...
"We Made You" totally fits Relapse. The style is exactly like the rest of the album, as is the beat, as is the writing, as are the lyrics. They're just more condensed and in a sense dumbed down since it's a single, so the jokes are more surface-based and lighter, but it totally fits Relapse.
The thing is, the Christopher Reeves shit is a running joke that Em is fully aware of. He has made it clear he knows that Reeves is dead, and it's just a running gag. But We Made You was supposed to be his big comeback, and he came out with this shit?
We Made You doesn't fit RELAPSE AT ALL. Why the fuck didn't he just release My Darling as first single? Yes, I get it, it's not "radio-friendly" enough. Well, fuck, I don't think 3 AM is very radio friendly. You say Just Lose It doesn't fit Encore because of SOME serious tracks on a goofy shitpile of an album. Relapse was a SERIAL KILLER ALBUM, and probably Em's darkest album to date. We Made You simply makes no sense. It would've been fantastic if he'd done a parody, i.e. instead of the old formula of bashing celebrities, why not make one with the same style (beat, maybe chorus) but each verse about different ways of murdering them? With the catchy hook, it would've been conclusive proof that no, fans don't listen to the words of his songs.
Without Me is the standout track on a much more mature Em album. The first single had the potential to break the formula like "Not Afraid" did, but not in such a clumsy, clunky way.
Don't get me wrong, I LIKE We Made You. It certainly sounds far better than anything on Encore (save Em's verse on Spend Some Time). I'm just saying that it's probably one of the worst songs on Relapse.
