GKMC winning would be groundbreaking for hip hop in general. It would be the first album that by no means would be compromised for the general mainstream audience. One can argue that Speakerboxxx, while it was by no means a "pop" album, was definetely made to have that mainstream appeal. GKMC winning would prove that even without doing the crossover you can become big.

Well there is an advantage because GKMC was sort of a "sleeper". Not every critic immediately went and grabbed it and evaluated it. It was his DEBUT album so outside hip-hop, people really ddnt know him much.

Look at it this way, some people only saw kendrick on Snl, only heard him on Control, first got into him on the Yeezus tour, first "hit" was Problems, will only listen once the list comes out.

Or, alternatively, his singles took off slower and later and because they weren't as ubiquitous as Taylor Swift they lasted longer on the radio. Swimming pools was weeks of steady selling. That is new people falling in love with him.

Look at it this way, critics called Recovery Eminem's comeback album.

They might give it to Taylor just because it sold the most and there's nothing controversial about it. They certainly gave it to Babel last year for that reason.

I would much rather it to go to RAM tho if it doesn't go to GKMC just because I think Taylor Swift is terrible but I don't care too much tbh so it won't really bother me either way.

Kendrick will get Bigger, Macklemore won't.

People of a genre are loyal. Rock fans like their arcade fire, R&B likes its Adele, Alternative likes its Nine Inch Nails. The problem with people like Macklemore is that they are so pop, hip-hop does not consider them one of their own. When they stop being "new, different, fresh, hot" they will be discarded like the Akons, Ludacris and T-pains.
