Yes, they start well but then I don't know why Ye decides to switch beats and ruins it all.
Well, better this than repeat what you heard in the first 5 seconds through 5 minutes and then switch it up a little bit in the chorus.
Kanye has always relied on great beats so we could ignore his average lyricism. In this one, the beats are overproduced and his lyricism is mediocre on most of the songs.
Naaaaaah, but there's always that argument... that "oh, nobody listens to Kanye albums for the rapping"... that's not true. I loved the rapping and concepts on his first... 5...
And Kanye's rapping, lines, concepts and personality was the main reason I listened. I'm MC first-music second; the fact Kanye was a great producer and put his albums together in a very interestingly musical fashion was always great but not the main reason I listened to his music.
If you take some of his best songs like "Touch the Sky" and "Homecoming"... he's actually good, rap-wise, he's passionate - there's a concept and a focus and a story and cohesive, entertaining rapping; or even more recently on Watch the Throne...
On Yeezus though... the music focus is THE main focus, and it just feels like some random verses spluttered in amongst the music. There doesn't feel like this clear definition between the songs like usual. If you take Graduation; there's no mistaking "Good Morning" for "Stronger"... but here... I mean, the music sounds cohesive and yet continuously inventive, which I like a lot... but his rapping and concepts just aren't up to scratch on this project for me...
Again, maybe I'm judging too early and it'll grow on me but, when I first heard him on "Gorgeous" I actually thought "this is fucking nice", but I didn't get that feeling with a single song on Yeezus... I kinda got the feeling with the music, like the music and vibe of "Black Skinhead" and the intro on "New Slaves" - it all feels pretty epic and bipolar but, feels like he should have spent more time with the concepts and to the raps... since... he didn't even produce these tracks... so aside from overseeing it... THIS long for some of his most forgettable and generic raps spluttered between music?
I'm not entirely disappointed as it's kind of an interesting listen and I'm still re-listening and settling in to it, but initial feelings are not anything special. Doesn't feel very thought-out.
