I just skimmed this on Youtube...and good god the production was such a turn off. I miss the soulful Kanye.

He didn't produce these tracks though...

So he didn't do much besides oversee it, give it its silly title, write the meh raps and then enlist RR.

His praise as an "artist" felt short on this album. And it makes me angry that there is no song on the album that I can just play and enjoy without having to be distracted by the random beat switches or weird sample inserts here and there.... I just cant enjoy it. and as a Fan, it makes me very angry :angry:

You could compare kanyes work with a painter who just splashes different colours on to a piece of paper. You have to be very wier to appreciate it.

Well I like daring, I like innovative, I like artistic...

But too often Kanye thinks just simply being... different is the same as good art. As in, just wearing an absurd outfit is the same as wearing an amazing outfit...

The metaphor he used for 'Dark Fantasy' for example is so contrived and corny.

And then if you don't agree it's genius you 'don't get it'... which is just nonsense.

Tarantino is an example of a real artist - a thinker who combines all the elements of homage, sampling, innovative structure, realism, humour and everything Kanye often tries to do. Which isn't to say I don't think Kanye doesn't sometimes achieve it... as I enjoy his first 5 albums a lot, but he's also quite pretentious and doesn't put as much work in to the craft of getting better as he does being different. It'd be nice to see some deeper ideas rather than just more weird sounds.
