Seriously though, I hope Kendrick doesn't get caught up in the hype with his Control verse and his cypher verse. Songs like these are awesome but GKMC and S80 were great because they had amazing concepts that were well executed and they were overall cohesive albums. Maad City was the perfect hype song and it didn't need any senseless bragging. Songs like this will only bring down the quality of the album. I have faith in Kendrick but idk

But i think you miss the difference between the control verse and the cypher one. With control, it does have an aggressive tone but it is merely a conceptual way to say "hip-hop is dead" so, in a way, its authentic, powerful and backed up with substance. The I'm trying to murder you niggas sounds as passionate and real as i have heard him.

The cypher verse in contrast was obvious and, one could argue, needless confrontation. "i got my thumb on hip-hop and my foot in the back of your ass" are merely rap braggadocio. To his defense, he was NOT supposed to spit on the cypher so it was, to an extent, a freeystyle. (verified by Q)

i do hope he carries over the energy, pride and aggression in all three. When i listen to The City, Power Circle, Control, Black Lip Bastard remix etc, he sounds hungry enough to not get caught up in trying to deliver a message. In not necessarily speaking to an audience of ignorant visitors to Compton but residents of the hip-hop domain. Its less high brow, less socially conscious and will get less critical acclaim but i LOVE those type of records. That type of energy. That form of indulgence

The conversation was about how there was "no competition and everything had gone soft". To me, that is a "hip-hop is dead" mentality to me especially considering how emcees like Eminem and Kendrick value that. Not in terms of "there are no dope rappers" but more in terms of "rappers aren't doing what they supposed to"

Well when he said hip-hop went soft he was referring to all the soft shit coming out in like 97 and then again in like 02. Really he was talking about how hip-hop goes through cycles based on what's popular atm. He meant that he wanted to change the shift back to competition and beef in rap but that doesn't mean he think that it was dead before lol
