I didn't talk about the commercial impact or about the popularity, and for the rest, it's your opinion tbh, I would say that it's easily one of the greatest albums of the 2000s but it's also my opinion.

Maybe you don't like the college dropout but how isn't it a classic ? because you don't consider Kanye as a great MC ? then it's fair to say that Thriller isn't a classic because MJ wasn't able to rhyme.

Alrighty then fellas...

This will need to be more about Kanye's next album, and not his first one if we can help it. I know that an artist's past discography factors into their future one, but we're getting into a "Kanye sucks/Kanye doesn't suck" type of discussion, and we all know that goes nowhere. Let's all just agree that The College Dropout is a good (or great, or classic) hip hop album. Or don't. Either way, let's try to move on, ok?

I don't want this thread getting closed over bickering.

The term Classic is thrown around too much but acting like College Dropout isn't a classic is kinda pathetic

But I don't understand why recently people started to act like rhymes are not important. This is hip hop and rap. If you want to be considered as a great rapper, you have to know how to rhyme. Rhyming is important.

That's why Kanye is a great artist but only an average rapper.

People have different interpretations of what defines an album as classic. Quality in any aspect of an album might be overlooked due to personal taste. Emotional reactions to the way an artist (or his fanbase) acts can also make someone feel negatively about their music, whether or not that's fair. The point is that some people just don't like him or his music, and that's fine.

The ones that do (whether or not they believe he has ever made a classic) can be here and discuss the next album. The ones that don't should probably stay out. Either way though, this thread really isn't about The College Dropout. If that's something that people want to debate about, they should make a new thread strictly for that discussion in HHD.

I never called kanye " a great rapper" tbh

I would say the opposite, why recently people started to act like rhymes were important. Of course you have to rhyme but some artists don't need to be great rhymers because they excell somewhere else, some artists are great story tellers, lyricists (well, I bet we all have a different definition of "lyricisim"), they have complex flows, complex rhythm, etc.
I do believe that an artist like Tupac is still one of the most impressive MC but I would understand if you disagree :y:
I believe that a lot of people act like rhymes aren't important because a lot of rappers rap non sense, they basically want their verse to sound "good" but we all have different approach of this genre I guess

LOL this dude said "one song from SSLP has more creativity" than the whole of College Dropout hahaha.

my nigga so I'm Shady is more creative than College Dropout? Just Don't Give a Fuck? Cum on Everybody?

Guilty Conscience and Brain Damage are the only real creative songs on SSLP, everything else could have been done by anyone else lol. ya'll overrate Em's skill too much.

trimss wrote:That's why Kanye is a great artist but only an average rapper.

so everyone that doesnt rhyme crazily is just "average"? lol thats bullshit man. If rap was all about rhymes, then a rapper would be called a RHYMER.

MC = master of ceremonies. MC =/= extreme rhymer

I didn't say Rap is all about rhymes Blu. And I didn't talk about rhyming crazy. But everyone knows Kanye's rhyming game isn't great at all.

Why you mad though?

Last chance, stop bickering about The College Dropout and whether or not it's a classic, or how it stacks up to another artist's discography. It doesn't matter, this thread isn't about that. If you want to discuss Kanye as an artist, that's relevant, but the rest of it needs to be less focused on his first album, and more focused on his next one.

Well even if you're going off those aspects...

SSLP has hugely inspired two of the biggest recent names - Tyler and Hopsin in rap in a while, their styles are direct reflections of Em's initial impact and style, and they readily admit it...

Kendrick also said Em influenced him a lot...

So we have a few of the best recent names in rap saying that, compared to? Cudi and Drake... lol. I like Cudi, Drake is a cunt, but, Em's initial impact had more influence. And we're only just truly beginning to see it - as the kids that grew up on him become stars (B.o.B).

SSLP was a whole new milestone in rap, not quite the same as MMLP, in fact nowhere near the same, but stylistically at least; it was blazingly fresh... The College Dropout... all I hear is people talk about Kanye's creative use of samples lmao... wow? There's nothing innovative about it in any other way, or rap wise, other than perhaps his subject-matter being more everyday.

And to the guy who said "Guilty Conscience" and "Brain Damage" are the only two concept tracks... you mean other than (not to mention "Role Model", "As the World Turns" and "My Fault", "97 Bonnie and Clyde"? one of EM's most ingenious tracks ever and on its own more original, funny and striking than any song Kanye's made...

Also 'any other rapper could do the rest'... no, no they couldn't. Lol.

yeah but I highly disagree.
It's true for artists like Tyler and Hopsin but some artists will say that Eminem influenced them because they have some respect for him but look at Kendrick, I still don't know where is the Eminem influence in his songs. He talked about Eminem a the beginning of his career but he doesn't talk about him anymore.

Cudi and Drake aren't the only artists influenced by Kanye, what about Pusha-T ? he also influenced a lot of other stars, all genre (Adele, Franck Ocean, etc)
