Rapping is only about lyrics and delivery. Period.

The beats/instrumentals you rap on have nothing to do with how good you are at rapping; they're only an indication of your judgement/taste. Any "sound" Kanye creates on each album that isn't produced by his vocal cords (no matter how much they're pushing the boundaries of art or whatever pretentious shit you said) is immaterial when we're judging him as a rapper.

Kanye's lyrics are atrocious. He displays no technical competency. He was barely even rapping on his latest solo album (there's actually more singing on there). There's an improvement on Watch The Throne, but if he bothers to rhyme more than one syllable, it's back to the same 2 - 3 syllables at the end of each bar, like every other rapper.

Not to mention his rhymes are incredibly boring and generic. He's rhyming "DJ" over and over again on "Gotta Have It," for fuck's sake...the easiest thing to do in the world. It's like Eminem rhyming Jay-Z on Encore.

The "murder capital"/"murder for capital" line. The line makes sense, and he's used a pun to actually say something, but it's nothing special. Plays on words like this are a dime-a-dozen.

Any great rapper should be able to have verses that don't look embarrassing when you copy/paste them into a thread on a forum. So let's have another go (and completely random this time...randomly clicked it on Youtube):

Damn baby pussy can't be your only hustle
Unless you bad as Naomi Russell
I mean a lot of ***** got money
So basically, Russell ain't the only Russell
Russell Brand, Russell Crowe
Zero Zero Zero Zero, a whole lot of 0's
What you after, actor money?
You in line behind currency, yeah you after money
Bullet proof condom when I'm in these hoes
Got staples on my dick (why) fuckin' centerfolds
And I swear to God they so cold
Got a ***** in Miami wearing winter clothes
I got my fur on feelin' like Jerome
She got her fur too, we got our his and her on
Don't look at the jewelry, or get your blurr on
Too close, you comatose so dope you overdose
Get back, you overclose
Oh no, the hood was strugglin'
But then I blessed them with that Polo
***** was making music and then my first solo
Collo Drolo, sponsored by Manolo
She got Zeppi Notos ready for some photos
Yeah and I'm cold bitch, please try to keep the door closed
Lanvin thousand dollar tee with no logos
Let me show you what I see when my eyes closed

Yet another embarrassing verse. Can't write an impressive multi to save his life. Raps at the pace of a snail. Rapping about absolutely nothing. Rhymes Russel with Russel. This is one of the top 8 rappers in the world, folks. Not to mention a punchline so bad that I wish I never read it: "got staples on my dick...fucking centerfolds."

His vocals are also pretty poor. Any rapper who ends his bars like this, HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA...is pretty fucking annoying when he spits, HAAAAAAAAAAA.

Fiftys_Advocate wrote:Lastly, I do not see your point in posting lyrics of a one song, which is not lyrically the best. The celebratory/pumping up song. Have you seen the performance of N....s in Paris live? Heat, energy.

Performing a lyrically awful song well means nothing. And we're judging the studio-created versions of his songs, not the live versions.

You, sir, are fucking awesome. :y:

The reason why rappers like Kanye are even relevant in today's time is the fact that, rap is changing. People like pop elements to be included in Rap songs, like female hooks and little bit of singing, and not a song with hardcore rapping . With pop influence growing rapidly, rap music is bound to be influenced by it. And so was born, what you call as : Rap/pop. If you like both Genre's and you're getting them both in a song, you'd love it. The same is the case with Kanye. He has taken it to a whole new level, no wonder people appreciate him more. Taste in music is changing rapidly, it's a well known fact.

Look at some of Tupac's records, a perfect balance of singing and rapping, with rap taking up the majority of the song. Most of his songs had female hook, but the singing part was curtailed to only the hook, not more than that.

Kanye, for me, is not even a rapper. He sings just to fill in and elongate the duration of the song, and to hide the lack of his writing skills. A rapper who has 25% rapping in an Album, is not a rapper. Hell, if that's the point of kanye being so big; I would call Chris Brown a rapper too.

I agree, rap is about the lyrics, like I wrote here before. Lyrics and delivery. You can be a great rapper and never produce a beat.

Actual rap songs have nothing to do with how lyrics look when posted on a forum
