Nas Names "Hip-Hop's Best Lyricists"

Postby lil_bayly » Nov 30th, '10, 02:08

Nas creates a playlist of some of Hip Hop's finest lyricist for a Rolling Stone's feature

The new issue of RollingStone features themed playlists from 50 different artists. Among those are Cee-Lo with a selection of the best of the Dirty South, Drake provides a Jimi Hendrix list and Nas provides his list of "Hip-Hop's Best Lyricists." Below is what Nas had to say.

"When I said 'hip-hop is dead' a few years ago, I felt we'd gotten away from the great wordplay and storytelling," says Nas. "There's a place for the party shit and a place for the gangster shit. I focus on the guys that are always pushing themselves forward."

1. "My Downfall" - Notorious B.I.G., 1997

The lyrics are about how he's acing the shadows of death, despite all of his success, and he's giving it to you in a way that makes it seem so real.

2. "If My Homie Calls" - 2pac, 1991

He's just saying to his boys that he's going to be a friend no matter how big he gets.

3. "Road To The Riches" - Kool G. Rap & DJ Polo, 1989

The way we're rhyming now? He was already doing it then .

4. "A Bird In The Hand" - Ice Cube, 1991

5. "Paid In Full" - Eric B. & Rakim, 1987

6. "I'm Single" - Lil Wayne, 2010

I'm recently divorced, so I feel what he's saying.

7. "Tears of Joy" - Rick Ross, 2010

Ross is at the pulpit here.

8 "The Moment I Feared" - Slick Rick, 1988

It's cinematic. He's at a hip-hop show and ices this girl who played him, then he's in prison getting violated by some dude. This was unheard of.

9. "Empire State of Mind" - Jay-Z, 2009

This song is huge. It sounds like Broadway. It's New York's modern anthem.

10. "Queen Bitch" - Lil' Kim, 1996

At the time, females rappers didn't appeal to the street, but Kim came with the vulgarity, sexuality and gangster shit.

I'm single is honestly one of the worst songs of all time. It just straight up blows. My opinion don't touch me there.

He mentions Rick Ross and Lil Wayne but no Eminem?

Lmao. Man, it seems nobody gives Em his respect unless they're pressed to. Like Nas before, said about Em's comeback that Em contributes so much lyrically etc. but unless theses guys have his name brought up they never mention him.

How the fuck are Lil Kim and Rick Ross worth mentioning but Eminem not. Ridiculous.

I honestly put it down to racism.

If Eminem was black, Nas would 100% mention him.

And I wouldn't say it if it wasn't somebody like Nas or Mos Def. Who are obsessed with black history and 'black activism' and basically are racist cunts.

They begrudgingly respect Em because they're forced to but don't give him his due.

Seems humble not putting himself on the list....

But how come he mentions "Empire State of Mind" when almost any hip-hop fan can tell you that is not Jay's best effort?! At least he left himself out...

Well that's not humble that's just, normal lmao.

Who the hell puts themselves on a top 10 list.

When rappers get asked their top 10, it's assumed 'excluding them' as that's why they're asking them lmao. It's their top 10, not the top 10 including them.

Yeah, a lot of black people are very racist these days. And I'm not racist at all, obviously since I listen to black music more than I do white music. And I know music is music, I don't mean to segregate black and white like that, but that's how everyone views this. A lot of black people don't like Em solely based on his color, especially where I live. Recovery has been well received down here as well, though, so I hope he gets more respect. He's been getting a whole bunch of respect these days, that it just astonishes me that Nas wouldn't mention Em like that, but put Lil Wayne (I'm Single, nonetheless) over him. This was coming from NAS, I would understand if this was just some guy off the streets, but Nas is a respected lyricist. He's got to know that Em is the better lyricist over Wayne. I don't know though, maybe this list was just off the top of his head. It sounded a lot like it

Sometimes i really feel you out to pick sumthing but nwae,

"Seems" means just that seems. Not that he is, or i believe or whatever but that he ddnt put himself on the list just SEEMS humble.

Now, i'm not familiar with Biggie and Pac and Rakim (who you will probably quote) but here are five exmples when they DO put themselves in top tens...

Jay Z- when the "hottest Mc in the game was announced last year"
Kanye- Saying he's only about three rungs down
Lil Wayne, drake and basically the whole of young money
Eminem- TIC etc
Timbaland- saying he's the best producer
The guy who poduced thriller- referring to Kanye West
A couple people (not sure the names but imma guess) on Nas interview on who he thinks is the greatest like Cool J and Cube?
And besides hip-hop (yeah, i also listen to other forms of music) LOTS of artists put themselves up there just not on the number one spot.
