Which type of rappers do you like more- punchline, or real

Postby Wreck » Jan 22nd, '11, 14:32

punchline or artists that always have real messages in their songs?

biggest and best example of rappers with messages, 2pac, Public Enemy, N.W.A., Ice Cube, Immortal Technique, Vinny Paz, Nas, etc.

And lyrical rappers, their are many of em, Eminem, Rakim, Big L, Big Pun, Jadakiss, etc.

Their can be examples of artists with both in em, but not clear cut ones that use it everyday in their songs/on their albums.

Vote & discuss :smoking:.

I listen to more lyrical rappers but I would like to see more rappers that change music, not just lyrics.

You can't really differentiate like this.

Storytelling are supposed to be lyrical, too.

I really can. Ice Cube, 2pac, Nas were not, are not lyrical. Yes their are types of both. But I'm asking in a rapper which do you like more. So ignore my examples if you have to.

Nas not lyrical? :confusion:

But I really think that the best rappers are lyrical and can bring across a valid message at the same time.
Just take Nas for example.

I don't consider Nas lyrical at all. I consider Em, Rakim, Big L, Big Pun lyrical. Nas does have a little bit of lyricism in him, not all that much though. And Eminem for example, has made a lot of real songs, like Lose Yourself, Beautiful, etc. but that really wasn't his nature.

Nas does have a lot of lyricism in him, I wouldn't say he is amongst the most lyrical rappers of all time but his rhyming is ridiculously impressive at times.

What do you mean that wasn't Eminem's nature?
Sing For The Moment, Renegade, Lose Yourself, ... these songs are his best work. Storytelling and lyricsim combined at its finest.

Why is this thread basically named punchline vs storytelling, yet the choices are lyrical and storytelling? Both really go hand in hand, good storytellers have to be good lyricists too, most of the time. Not all of the time. Punchlines vs storytelling (like I originally thought this thread would be about), storytelling wins easily

Came back to annihilate, the game's in dire straights, as I await
Word on Satan, as I drop, fall to my knees before this Quija board and I pray
Now I lay me down to sleep
I do this shit in my sleep, I’m sleepin' now, imagine if I awake

I meant to say artists like 2pac that make real songs like Keep Ya Head Up, Changes, Letter 2 My Unborn, etc. yet everyone has to bring up the same point. I didn't know how to word it, so I named it storytelling.

Yes, you basically just said what I said 2 posts before. Eminem has some real songs but that's not his whole career, like it is with Nas, 2pac, Ice Cube, etc. now chill y'all. I'll reword it for you assholes :smoking:. And 3-4 songs with real messages doesn't make up a whole artist's career, so by your examples, Em is not even close to being an artist with real messages in their music. Pretty much everything on Encore, on top of the material being garbage, has no message at all. Same with TES, MMLP and the SSLP as well. He did a lot of better music as far as messages go in Recovery :y:. Don't even ask me bout Relapse. Besides Beautiful it had nothing of that in it.

Ohhh how is that something slick? I like rappers who get super lyrical one song and give you a deep emotional song next. GTFO with all your bullshit.
