Most offensive/vulgar/controversial MAINSTREAM artists

Postby FreeSpeech » Mar 2nd, '11, 05:49

Obviously dudes like Necro or Gravediggaz are very offensive, but it's not like they have anyone telling them not to be. Who are the real mainstream artists with the most offensive stuff? My top two:

Eminem: duh...

DMX: I feel like he's worse than Eminem honestly. Cusses way more, way more violent, more "faggots" and "bitches", etc.

Not really his music per say, but as a personality he's one of the biggest assholes and plays it off well. Even the president called him an asshole, he's one the few real ROCKSTARS of our time with an immense ego. Quite a character really.

But of course we're referring to music wise and who curses out fags more and what not than I guess you wouldn't put him there.

Yeah, but how many albums has he sold worldwide?
How many grammy awards has he won in his career?
How many of his albums have been #1 in any other country besides USA?
How many top 10 singles has he had?
What was the peak of his popularity, and how relevant was he?
Is he still relevant in a mainstream capacity in 2011?
How strong are his online / social media outlets?

And who really cares what he says? It's not as if the mainstream media are picking up his every word, or following his every move is it?

DMX is a "well known rapper" but I'd hardly call him mainstream. To me, mainstream is the likes of Em, Jay-Z, Kanye West, Lil Wayne, Drake, etc.

Wtf, does this have to do with him being offensive and whatnot.
And who really cares what he says? It's not as if the mainstream media are picking up his every word, or following his every move is it?
\

So are we going by who's the most famous or something?

DMX is a "well known rapper" but I'd hardly call him mainstream. To me, mainstream is the likes of Em, Jay-Z, Kanye West, Lil Wayne, Drake, etc.

No this is arbitary and you're just pulling it out of your ass, saying he's not mainstream because he's not as famous as those listed rappers is like saying I.T. isn't underground for having more than 5 mill youtube hits. What's next Nas, Lupe and Common aren't mainstream?

It's funny because some people genuinely believe this.

Really...did you just start getting into rap the last 3 years?

It's Dark and Hell is Hot went 4x platinum
Flesh of my Flesh, Blood of my Blood went 3x platinum
...And Then There Was X went 5x Platinum
The Great Depression and The Grand Champ also went platinum

He has 5 number one albums (the same amount as Eminem) and many top 100 hits

Yeah...he's not mainstream

All that stuff you said is in America. I purposely said OUTSIDE of America. I know it's a difficult concept for you Americans to grasp, but there are other countries in the world you know.

'Recovery' alone reached #1 in 11 different countries.

It doesn't matter anyway, commercial success is no indication of good music at all, and never has been. But my point was, it's easy to be offensive/controversial and get away with it when you're not THAT commercially successful, mainstream or well known. DMX isn't. The average Joe in any selected country would never have heard of him. The same can't be said about Eminem.

Eminem is the world's highest selling artist of the decade and is extremely commercially successful. 13 Grammy Awards, 90+ million albums sold worldwide, countless no.1 singles worldwide, countless top 10 singles worldwide, top 20 singles, top 40 singles etc.... 8 Mile was huge. Not to mention D12, two #1 albums for that, and a few hot singles. He gave birth to another superstar world popular rapper, 50 Cent and made him a star. The guy is basically the 2000's version of Michael Jackson.

^ And with all that in mind, he is definitely the most controversial rapper... WHO HAS BEEN SUCCESSFUL too.

Even the simple fact he is a white rapper who was signed by Dr.Dre was controversial too. The US government tried to ban his music, protests, the fucked up things he has said about people etc etc the list goes on

Did I ever say Eminem wasn't controversial or successful? And guess what? Rap music only matters in the U.S. Sorry to break it to you. Look at anyone's top 10. 99% of rappers are from the U.S.

But you saying DMX isn't mainstream is just fucking ignorant. I forgot selling over 20 millions records was underground.

One Mic, did you even read my post? DMX obviously is mainstream. I said the whole purpose was to single out the rappers who are part of big labels, sell millions, and still say offensive stuff. DMX was insanely popular. Not to sound like an "ignorant American" but I honestly couldn't care less how popular he is outside of the US, he's huge here. That's like me saying those Asian pop singers aren't mainstream since they don't sell here but sell millions in Asia. Besides, like it or not, America is the birthplace of hiphop and dominates it. Again, not to sound ignorant, but who cares if the rest of the world doesn't listen to an American rapper? Other countries don't matter in the overall scheme of hiphop. Everyone can't be as popular as Em. DMX is one of the biggest to do it.
