Other than Lupe's obvious case I think it's more so their drive to experiment that makes them choose beats like the ones above. I enjoy the majority of Blu, Akala & Lupe's production (Nas' is either great or forgettable), but sometimes they go overboard trying to find that beat that "fits the mood", if you get what I mean.

Canibus' production was just straight sub-par. It wasn't because of his style, it was just trash. Dunno if that's because of the beats he had to work with or his ear for them but his entire project was Sarah Marshall. "Rip The Jacker" had good production though.
