Want to get into Mos Def but I can't.........

Postby OMEGA » May 5th, '11, 06:34

Title says it all. I've been trying to get into Mos Def since I heard Gorillaz "Stylo" and "Sweepstakes" but it's really hard. I downloaded The Ecstatic, and while I thought it was cool and had some amazing songs (Auditorium and Life in Marvelous Times), it felt kinda boring and monotonous. I also downloaded The New Danger and thought it was average lyrically and musically speaking. The production on Black on Both Sides put me to sleep, so I couldn't finish the album.

I know I must be doing something wrong since I've seen people call him among the greatest MC's alive. I know there's tons of potential there, but seems that his music still doesn't "click" with me. I wonder if it's the production (most of it blows tbh).

So yeah, could you guys recommend what songs should I listen to in order to "warm-up" and give his albums another chance?

Maybe you just don't like him as much as you think? I wouldn't recommend forcing yourself to like an artist, especially if it's based on other peoples opinions. Just enjoy the songs you like and be happy. Otherwise, the songs you like now may become quite the opposite.

I only listened to certain songs like Bush Knocked Down the Towers song. Hahaha. I'm not really into him too. Not gonna say he's not good though. Some songs are emotional but I do agree that he's pretty monotonous.

Mos Def - I Against I
Mos Def & Stephen Marley - Hey Baby
Mos Def - Here Comes The Champ
Mos Def - Foundation
Mos Def - Get Ta Steppin
Mos Def - Life Is Good

The reason why I'm trying to "force" myself to like Mos Def is because I see the potential. It has happened to me a lot of times before. Kid Cudi, for example, I didn't like him that much at the beginning, but because I kept listening to his music until it clicked, he has now become one of my favorite artists. I hope the same happens with Mos Def sometime.

I feel the same way. I've never heard an album of him but it's probably because the songs I've heard from him, he just goes berserk with syllables I've never heard nor understand. His way too technical. But his laid back delivery and persona is awesome, sounds calm and I like that. I'm def gonna check out his albums though, some day...some day.

I'm in the same boat man, I recognise Mos as one of the most talented rappers of the last 15 years, but for whatever reason I've never fully gotten his music

I've said on here before that I think Black On Both Sides might be a little too Afrocentric for my tastes, which isn't a knock on Mos, but as a white guy from Ireland, his content (at least on that album) just isn't something I can relate to a whole lot, it's somethng I respect rather than enjoy (but Hip Hop and Mathematics are unbelievable tracks)

I will say though , Blackstarr is a fucking amazing album, and I'm not big on Talib either, but that album, Jesus definitely something every hip hop head should hear at least once, if you haven't checked that album out yet OP then I'd advise you to ASAP :y:
