Rappers do not understand tax law

Postby FreeSpeech » May 22nd, '11, 23:14

OK, in the past couple days, I've heard the "you're just your label's tax write off" punchline like 5 times, most recently from Hopsin's I'm Here.

THAT ISN'T HOW TAXES WORK. NO ARTIST CAN BE A TAX WRITE OFF, IT DOESN'T MAKE SENSE.

Just had to get that out :coffee:

It actually does make sense when you think about it.

The rapper probably means the artist is dependent upon the label and dependents can be written off to a point.

I killed Osama punchline > every punchline fad.

Even though, I haven't heard a single rapper say an Osama punchline. I guess, I'm counting on Bad A.K.A. Nickel N9ne A.K.A. Royce Da 5'9" A.K.A. myself to say it.

What would he say it on though? BME was done way before that and Success Is Certain has been done for a while... I think.

I can make some arrangements.

When an artist is signed to a label, he/she is usually treated as a product, and products can be written off.

^You could say it's my field of 'expertise' since I'm a business student...

So am I, and no, products aren't written off, at least not in America. You can write off stuff like depriciation, charitable donations, etc. Even labor and raw materials. But your actual product? No.

If you buy something and it relates to your job, you can write it off. For example, someone I know is in the marketing/entertainment field and she can write off cds, music, movies, etc. if she chooses to. I don't think she does, but I've heard her discuss it a few years ago.

I was going with the dependent bit because I know certain rebates are given for dependent children or students, depending on the provider's annual income, age, etc. This is a bit of a reach, but it would still make the punchline understandable/not completely random.

Shouldn't this be in serious debate? I see no music being discussed here. :coffee:
