Good political songs?

Postby FreeSpeech » Jun 15th, '11, 01:59

OK, I'm getting real into politics. I'm both very weary of how shady politicians can be, yet not a conspiracy theory moron. I know it's hard to define what I'll like/not like, but anything that's not fact I don't listen to. I don't like Immortal, he's a pretentious douche, JMT and their related projects are pathetic to me. Here's some good political songs I've been bumping. It's US election season, and it's honestly fascinating me like never before.
Here's some I've been bumping, feel free to add (preferably inbedded youtube links please)

Sickest song!

America's really becoming a police state. I'm not paranoid at all, but it's true. Patriot Act, police shooting coverups, scary shit.

Again, Technique is not pretentious. A pretentious person would take the high road and say something to impress others without backing it up - whereas Technique is probably the most charitable MC out there, the work he's done in places like Afghanistan and Nicaragua (opened a school for children), Haiti, Bolivia and Cuba just to name a few showcases how for the cause he really is and how much he truly believes in what he's saying and not saying it just for the sake of it.

The problem with Technique is he's pretty much the Eminem of the underground, and the same way Eminem pisses a fuck load of people off because his 16 year old fans think he's the greatest thing since sliced bread, Technique's fans are the same, the sheer numbers creates fuck loads of morons who misinterpret a lot of what he's saying and make it out like he's a second coming of Malcolm X (when they probably don't understand anything of what Malcolm was about anyway).

I'm not gonna derail this by arguing, but no that's not why I think that. He really doesn't have m(any?) hardcore fans here and IDGAF about youtube comments. I listen to his music. I watch his interviews. I know he's a nice guy with his charities and all, but I've formed my opinion from his music and it won't change unless he does :coffee:

I'm not sure if he has hardcore fans here but he definitely has a fuck load of hardcore fans, I mean he's probably one of the more well known MC's around the world which is very rare for an underground MC.

I'm not even trying to suggest you should change your opinion, the only reason I'm responding to it is because it's a view that quite a few people hold. I mean I consider myself pretty balanced even with artists I like, I can acknowledge Technique has a really bad voice, I can acknowledge his one dimensional direction can put people off, I can see some of his words can be abrasive, but this idea of Technique being pretentious is something I'll argue against all day, because I'm so adamant that if people were lucky enough to speak to him, he'd come off as the opposite after 5 minutes.

As for the thread, I consider myself a big supporter of political hip hop, and I have a large collection of political artists music, so I'll post a lot of my favorite.

Can't start any political hip hop discussion without Public Enemy. The originals. Even the song Jeezy song Venom posted above, the entire video is paying homage to this all time classic directed by Spike Lee.

The song by NWA that gave the people the belief that we could fight against the injustice. Fight the power was an idea whereas Fuck the Police was a movement. I'll never forget when I heard this.

Perhaps the ultimate protest song of it's era made by KRS One who makes the comparisons between the officers and the overseers.

I'll do some more recent ones later.

Take away my gun, I'm gonna tuck some other shit
Can't tell me shit about the tricks of this trade

And switch from a six to a sixteen inch blade
Shit's like a samurai sword or sensai
Shit just don't change to this day"

If you haven't heard Akala, he's pretty good to check out. His stuff is always reasonable, doesn't go overboard, and honestly just tells things the way they are...

Songwise (i dunno if you like English rap at all) this is pretty good, although not for everyone lol.

I like Tech, i'm not what you'd call a "hardcore" fan, but that's what got me into underground hip hop, i know multiple people who listen to (semi?) mainstream rappers like DMX, 50 Cent & Lloyd Banks, but a lot of them have still heard "Dance With The Devil", i know people who aren't into rap who know the song when they hear a part of it. And i know other people who aren't fans of rap who enjoy "You Never Know" (These 2 songs are stand-out for me because they don't completely match his discography).
Fuck a sig, i go accapella.
