Creative rappers/albums/songs?

Postby Verses » Jul 1st, '11, 22:05

I made a similar thread to this ages ago, but I've run out of music to listen to, so might as well again.

Basically, I wanna hear some original rap with creativity - be it musically, conceptually, a whole new style etc. I've grown bored of rappers who only display technical skill, it's actually a bit too common now.

To give you an idea of what I'm on about, I liked Rhyme Asylum's style of punchline rap, shit seemed inventive to me, there was a Jakki Da Motamouth album I loved (God vs Satan?), Sadistik's whole style combined with his production was amazing, Logic n Lowkey's track "Relatives" had an incredible level of intricacy and craftsmanship, I genuinely hadn't heard anything like Kid Cudi before I finally gave him a try, and I was blown away... Hopefully you get the idea.

Btw, don't stray from obvious answers, even if it's highly mainstream, there's a good chance I haven't heard it.

Listen to MF Doom's discography and Edan's Beauty and The Beat, no I don't feel like going in depth, just give them a listen.

Deltron 3030.

Very creative concept album with some overly dope production and some slick rhyming.
"Hyperwarp to Automator's crib and light the torch
They can't fight the force
Victory is ours once we strike the source
Enterprising wise men look to the horizon
Thinking more capitalism is the wisdom
and imprison all citizens, empower with rhythm
We keep the funk alive by talking with idioms"

First 2 I thought of were k-os and K'naan. I fucking love both of K'naan's albums and Joyfull Rebellion, Yes!, and Exit from k-os. Aesop is also really weird, and not really my style. People above have given good advice so check those out. Check out El-P too. Dude's a weirdo and his beats can be over the top, but he's definitely trying to be unique.

EDIT: Ever wondered what happened when you combined swing music and rap? Epicness

Also, forgot to add Kinetics & One Love if your lookin for some electronica-rap (that's not exactly correct. I don't really know how to classify the beats they rap over. Very synthy). Check out the song Sign Language: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6WOf88UkEIM. I think Yonas would also fall into that category: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MFwdz1ZGHg8

EDIT2: Just thought about FLOBOTS. Soooo good. Can't think of another song that sounds like Handlebars: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HLUX0y4EptA

Much love to everyone who contributed, I'm now a fan of nearly everything posted here, and I'm left slightly shocked at how much shit I was missing out on. Good stuff.
