Indie is much more than just a name.

It has everything to do with who's in charge. If you're a major-label artist, you are working for the label. They push you because they are making money off of you, and since they control the creative aspect of it as well, they can dictate whether or not a song or album will be released, period. Macklemore hired a distribution company to push the songs that he and Ryan decided would be pushed. They took that, pressed the albums, and submitted the songs to radio.

Macklemore isn't underground, that's true. He is definitely independent though.
