wordplay

Postby Minimii » Jun 29th, '13, 01:38

Anyone else think that wordplay is just stupid and shouldnt be used in rap lyrics most of the time, as it just creates needlessly complex lyrics which most of the time make no sense at all since it has been put there only for the sake of wordplay itself instead of actually coming up with a lyric that would make more sense?
I mean if you can do it then it could be used as a way to show off your lyrical ability, but only if you intend to make a purely lyrical song. In my opinion it has no place in serious rap.

I think it's impressive when done well but it can sound ridiculous when executed poorly.

A good example: "Got an Oscar, but I'm still a grouch"
A bad example: "Tell lady gaga she can quit her job at the post office, she's still a mail lady!"

That isn't a bad example. The line is funny and serves its purpose. It's not exactly cringe-worthy. THIS is cringe-worthy:

"DUN MAKE ME INTRADEUCE U TOO MAH POWAH TOOL, U NO DA FUCKING DRILL "

Yes, it is cringe worthy. It's completely forced... Gaga doesn't actually have a job at the post office...

Ehhh. It was delivered in a good manner and wasn't his win-all end-all punchline. Not a good punchline, but not cringe-worthy. It's not like he stopped the beat just for it i.e. I'M SO DONE WITH THIS SHIT THAT I MAY AS WELL WIPE!!

That still isn't as forced as the Gaga line. Many people on this forum have a problem with that line, but it's fine tbh. It fits, it wasn't forced, he didn't waste a whole bar setting it up. It's not classy, but it's effective.

Gaga line? Forced? Remember what Em said? It's like picking names out of a hat. If you're a pop star, your name rhymes with something, Em's probably going to put you in one of his "bashing" songs. The Shit Wipe line was the final punchline in an "serious" verse that Em stopped the whole beat for. The "male lady" line was purely humour.

What about "I'm the cousin of Godzilla, cause I spit fire and my dick's draggin'/dragon"? He executed that perfectly imo.

Yeah that's fine.

Snake do you genuinely think that gaga line isn't forced? :S

I consider that line forced. It would have hit home if she used to work in a post office of some sort (similar to what SilK pointed out) but she didn't so really all he had to do was think "Lady gaga is a lady...People say she has a dick...She's a male lady...mail lady.. .mail...post office...Eureka!" The terrible set up is why I don't find it enjoyable. I'm not too big a fan of his "may as well wipe" line either, but at least his set up wasn't long and flawed.

Sorry, poor choice of words. Yeah, it was forced, but it's not a good example if you want to make the difference between good and bad wordplay apparent. It was bad, yeah, but not mind-numbingly awful.

He could've said "I'm not saying she's a postal worker when i call her a mail lady!" or something, still a bit awkward, but at least it is much less forced.

I agree the "may as well wipe" line was out of place in the song it was in, but looking at both lines out of context I think it is executed much better than the gaga one.

Whoa whoa, in terms of execution, the mail lady line was delivered perfectly. the Shit Wipe line, on the other hand, was delivered terribly. When I heard it, my brain cringed so hard, pink gooey stuff squirted out of my ear and broke my earphones and killed an old lady outside.
