Platinum albums in 2013?

Postby Trimss » Jul 5th, '13, 18:01

Good Kid Mad City - Kendrick Lamar
The Heist - Macklemore
Nothing Was The Same - Drake
Untitled - Eminem
Magna Carta - Jay-Z (only due to the samsung deal..)

What else? I think J.Cole and Yeezy won't go platinum.

Well this is how I understood it. Samsung bought a million copies of the albums for 5$ each, and they come for free for those who buy the Galaxy s4.

Yeah, plus isn't it a re-re-release or something?

It'd be cool to know which artist went platinum in 2012 and 2013, and not just in hip hop but in every genre.

I don't think Em will go platinum in 2013?

Well, you're crazy if you don't. He'll push 500 000 at least on his first week, that's already a given that he'll go at least 1x platinum.

:-k Hmm, depends when he releases it though. If it comes out by early October (using your 500k estimate) then he just might. Later than that then he might struggle.

Relapse was at 961k after the third week which means they shipped at least 1 000 000 album and thus it's platinum. It reached a milli after the third week, though.

But remember Relapse wasn't really all that successful.

Yes, yes I know.
I'm just saying that at worst it'll take 4 technical weeks.

Yeah, and that's the worst case situation. If he drops a great single he might do it on his first week.

Relapse was stuck on a mill & a half selling 10k a week & then it did 160k or so first week after the re release, I think his new album will do what Relapse did, he'll struggle just like Kanye West, T.I, Jay-Z or Wayne.

It's a new generation and people want to listen to Drake, Kendrick Lamar, J.Cole, (Macklemore), I don't think the veterans really fit in this new "era".

It's time for Yelawolf to shine :coffee:

Nah man, he won't struggle. Kanye and Jay had questionable material with no singles, that's why it didn't sell. Eminem will release a single, I'm pretty sure of that. Plus he has all kind of tours and such. He's the only veteran that will go platinum this year.

But I agree. Wish Yelawold could go Gold at least

T.I. released a good album and failed, Jay-Z released a better album than BP3 and will probably fail. The veterans are not going to gain any new fans through their new albums who weren’t aware of them through their previous music. they need Justin Timberlake, Frank Ocean, Rihanna or Bruno Mars on their albums to stay relevant.

I asked my friends at college and they said everybody listen to Drake, Kendrick Lamar or J.Cole cause they at that phase in their life where they don't want to hear JayZ, Eminem or Kanye anymore
