Hello and welcome to Shuttle's My Year In Music Thread.
2013 was the year that I expanded my contact with music to the maximum. I began to lurk in forums and eventually joined TR when it was open for new members. Since MMLP2 came out I had little time to be around here but now I'm beginning to pick it up.
In this list I'll point out the album/song to each category and give a brief explanation in it. Let's go for it!
Ps: Don't get scared at the size of this thing. Check the list, read what you want.
Top 10 2013 Albums
Bubbling Under:
Magna Carta Holy Grail - Jay-Z
I had never heard a Jay-Z album in my life (other than WTT), so I received this one like: Ok, Jay, I know you're out of your prime and kind of uninspired, but show me why you are regarded as one of the greats. And he did it.
Eventhough the album is not in my top-10 because I don't appreciate it in it's entirety, he certainly gave me some songs to at least show some of his glow. Decent enough.
10) Hall Of Fame - Big Sean
I'm not sure this is better than MCHG tbh. Jay's album and number 10 and 9 was difficult to me. They are all subpar. I have Hall Of Fame in another category so I'mma talk more about it when we get there.
9) Underground Luxury - B.o.B
Yes, the man who had 2 #1 singles in an amazing debut album came with a generic project which opened Billboard 200 only in #22, selling 35.000 first week. Maybe we should accept the fact that the artist who once made B.o.B vs Bobby Ray and No Genre will never fulfil his potential. I did that, and that made me enjoy some tracks here and there. It's certainly forgetable, but it holds #9.
8) The 20/20 Experience (Part 2) - Justin Timberlake
Part 1 was a classic to me. I can't say the same about part 2 though. If this album had another name, maybe it would be higher in my list, but I expected it to have the same sound and it didn't. Some great tracks, some hardly special ones, but certainly not a proper sequel. I've bumped it just a few times this year, I'm saving it for the summer. Maybe it will get better.
7) Seven Days Of Funk - Snoopzilla & Dam Funk
I loved it. It takes me to a journey to a certain time and genre I didn't lived, both late 80's, early 90's and g-funk.
It's always nice to blast something different, and the project is dope. The fast playtime gets me too.
6) Yeezus - Kanye West
Top-5 was clear to me, I began to struggle on this one. Then I asked myself which of the remaining albums I heard was the one I've enjoyed the most. Next thing I did was place Kanye's sixt solo album in sixth. I don't think it's remarkable, revolutionary and outstanding. This ain't pitchfork. However, I can play it and actually enjoy the weird sounds it provides. When I'm on the mood, it's great. It couldn't go any higher on the list though, because the other ones are actually serious.
5) My Name Is My Name - Pusha T
Audacious is a word that doesn't apply to My Name Is My Name if you are talking sonically. Pusha delivered a great stripped down to basic rap album, and that's it. Top-5 to him.
4) Nothing Was The Same – Drake
After getting a RAOTY Grammy for Take Care, Drake delivered with NWTS. Don't even try it if you're ready to criticize, nothing less than an solid 8 if you enjoy Drizzy's good music. It's a safe album, and I think Drake has to go a little left in his next studio album, but his junior effort was good to solidify his sound.
3) Born Sinner - J. Cole
My hype for this shit was sky high since the release date was January 28th. It came out June 18th, so I was waiting for this album for more than half a year, checking interviews and promises of a classic. Just the fact that Born Sinner didn't let me down is enough for me to call it a pesonal classic.
2) The 20/20 Experience (Part 1) - Justin Timbrelake
Great album. I don't listen to pop music but I loved Future Sex/Love Sounds. JT delivered a way better project when he came back 7 years later. Colorful genre fusing music. That's art right there. Shits on part 2, btw.
1) The Marshall Mathers LP2 - Eminem
We finally made it to number one, and Em is there. The follow up to this classic had Matthew coming back for revenge, the continuation of the Criminal bank robbery, the better late than never moment when a line that was censored 13 years ago was finally said, the artist of the last decade claiming his spot as a God, the beloved but also hated ex-wife side of the story, the asking for forgiveness and also forgiving the relative who's been the #1 target... The certified AOTY goes to Slim Shady. Should I say Marshall? They are both the same, bitch!
Song Of The Year:
Mirrors- Justin Timberlake
Nine minutes, JT, you're on. Pop can't get any better than this. Meaninful song, drowned in love lyrics, beautiful instrumental, singing and melodies. It's all there. The song changes completly by the half of it, and it multiplies the outstanding outcome that is Mirrors. A Song of the year that we don't get every year.
Rap Song Of The Year:
Rap God - Eminem
No song was more impactful to me this year than Rap God. I remember when it came out, it was the day I became a Soldier. That title had been in my head since the tracklist was out. I didn't know what to expect when I was made aware that we were getting it earlier though. I waited untill 5pm in my local time, thinking that we will get the song then. Nah. Em posted a 10 minute instrumental song. When it ended, somebody posted the snippet. I was getting goosebumps after goosebumps and all I could do was nod while I had it blast on my skullcandy headphone. I kept screaming 'oooh' and I had the 1 minute and a half snippet on replay for more than 10 minutes. Then it hit me. That song was 6 minutes long. We would get that absolutely incredible thing for 6 minutes. It came out on Em's youtube channel, and I blasted it for the whole night. My head was still to understand what that was. Now I know. It's the Rap Song Of The Year.
Let Down Of The Year:
Hall Of Fame: Big Sean
I loved Detroit and even Finally Famous. Plus, Sean was hyping the album like crazy. It leaked and I went to college with that shit on my ipod, but I didn't want to listen to it on the bus so I was eager to get home and play it for the first time. There are some nice beats, but Sean didn't know what to do with them. A lot of forgetable songs and the good ones are nothing out of the ordinary. Definitely a let down.
Recovered Album from another year:
The Love Below - Andre 3000
3000's features got me and I had to check his side of the Outkast 2004's Grammy Album of the year double album. Shit is amazing. I'm proud that I've captured the concept on the very first time. Musically, this is incredible. Really. I can't wait for his solo album that should come out next year.
Slept On:
Acid Rap - Chance, The Rapper
The Gifted - Wale
Watching Movies With The Sound Off - Mac Miller
Because The Internet - Childish Gambino (Saving it to next year tbh)
Below My Radar:
Indicud - Kid Cudi
Self Made 3 - MMG Collabo
I Am Not A Human Being - Lil Wayne
Heard Once To Never Again:
Kiss Land - The Weeknd
Beat Of The Year
No order Top-5:
Pound Cake (NWTS)
Suicide (MNIMN)
Black Skinhead (Yeezus)
Versace (YRN)
Numbers On The Board (MNIMN)
Free Project Of The Year
Truly Yours I & II - J. Cole
What's better to keep the fans warm and hype up the album than some great songs? TY series certainly delivered. Part 1 is a classic and part 2 announced the Born Sinner release date with other 6 nice songs, including the venting madness that is Cole Summer. Part 3 were the bonus cuts from the album so it's not free, btw.
