Question on corniness in rap lines

Postby TheBoss123 » Feb 28th, '14, 02:47

I put this here because i wasnt sure where else it went, if this isnt the correct place i apologize.

What makes something corny? I would argue you can still have something thats corny but can still be clever.

Its bothered me that people screaming that the punchlines on recovery are corny, but then turn around and love lil wayne. Lil wayne is the king of being corny.

I do actually enjoy some of lil waynes music, and even some of kanyes, despite not being able to stand or understand critics appraisal of him.

These same people have no issue with lil wayne using lines like "sleeping on a nigga like im rapping in my jammies"
"goin at their heads like hair in a comb" or kanye west saying "back in my mind, im like damn no way, translation espanol no way jose"

Maybe its his flow and that hes not so in your face, if so, site that as a reason, but it doesnt make the line itself any less corny as it is written.

So i guess my real question is, what qualifies a line as being corny? and if its corny do you still believe it can be clever? Does one corny line genuinely ruin an entire song for people, or is that just the excuse to not like something they had no intention of liking to begin with?
I dont intend this to be a discussion about how much lil wayne and kanye west suck, i just site them as examples.
" Life can change your directions, even when you ain't planned it
All you can do it handle it, worst thing you can do is panic
Use it to your advantage, avoid insanity manage
To conquer, every obstacle, make impossible possible
Even when winning illogical, losing is still far from optional.." -T.I.

Maybe it's the fact that Eminem never really did many puns and punches, until it became popular so he switched up his whole style and fucking sucked at it.

Yes lil Wayne, kanye, and em all have corny lines.

Wordplay can make or break a 'Punch' song. Its all on what you think is corny but for the most part so many schemes have been done about the same thing a lot of rappers can't find new things to say. So they use horrible schemes with whatever comes to mind.

I think it has something to do with the way the rapper says it. when Ka says "i own the night, the heat is my receipt", on paper it looks corny but Ka says it in a very matter of fact tone. Em says "my lifes like kinda what my wife's like/ fucked up after i beat fucking her ass every night, Ike" . its the way he hits "fuckin" real hard that the listener will agree and say its dope. but as you mentioned, alot of rappers rehash the same topics, and Eminem aint the first to make a Ike Turner reference. my argument for why its not corny would be that he adlibs "what?" between the bars, as if he's asking and then answering his own question. but idk, its a fine line, and i have always wondered about what level of corniness is acceptable in a song.

Em did it cause he thought it was funny.
He thought the bad one ones were funny cause they were stupid. People took it too seriously.
