General Hip-Hop Discussion Thread

Postby classthe_king » Aug 20th, '14, 19:30

This is a place for posting whatever thoughts you're having about whatever you've been listening to lately that you don't think deserve it's own thread. Maybe it can spark some actual discussions about music. People can also ask questions about things they're unfamiliar with or things they don't understand.

Also this is not a thread for gossiping about artists personal lives.

I'll start, Wiz Khalifa's new album is not that bad. He seems to actually be trying to rap well and the production is pretty solid so it's hard to hate on any of the songs (besides ass drop which is god awful). What hurts it is that it plays it safe a lot of times so it doesn't have the enjoyability or replay factor of Kush & OJ but overall it's decent. It has some bangers and The Sleaze is one of my favorite songs because he actually takes a risk on the production and it kind of works. We Dem Boyz is also a great song to turn up to b4 you all start hating.

I usually dislike trap snares but in some songs they turn out to be entertaining. Example: John (Lil Wayne & Rick Ross), Don't Like.

yeah but maybe it's not something that was meant to be decipherable? He's almost a character in regards to how over the top his slang and pronunciation is. But like I said, that beat is dope and he has a good sense of flow so it doesn't really matter what he's saying because it's background music.

I think Blacc Hollywood is a decent album. But he's trying too many different sounds with for example RnB song like Promises or trap songs like We Dem boyz. IMO

Most trap songs just use 808 snares. Not even detuned to some extent to make it sound a bit more original.

I normally hate on RnB songs like that and hated all the other Promises-esq songs on the album but Promises had such a good melody so it was really sonically pleasing and I enjoyed it. It's basically the direct opposite of We Dem Boys but the juxtaposition of them being back to back during the album didn't bother me at all.
