No, but it's an important factor imo. As long as integrity isn't thrown out the window.

Perhaps their status and popularity before their deaths made a difference to how people perceived their music after they died.

I think side by side though...Pac and Big lined up against Pun and Big L, comparing their work...Pac and Big's was just immense.

All four were dope and I'm pissed they're all dead. Fuck this thread.

But in general your music taste is brutal. Hop and sh are in your top 10.

big l and big pun were enactable of making good music with personality (okay big l had a couple songs) but they were just slightly more impressive technical versions of generic 90's rapper x and definitely don't stand out or are unique. They could kill a cypher but their music is unimpressive.

The real quesion is why are they on som any top ten lists and why did they become legends. They had a few great 10/10 songs but not one classic, Capital Punishment could shoulda been one if it trimmed the excess fat off it and just made some hardcore album, but his next album was horrendous. Big L is honestly the more tragic case because he was pushed by A&Rs to make a more radio friendly album and of course had to cut Devil's Son from the album and add a few awkward songs in there (Street Struck, I don't understand it). If it was the hardcore/horrocore classic it should've been filled with songs like All Black, Devil's Son, Danger Zone, and his verse from Da Graveyard than yeah it coulda been a bonafide classic and than I'd understand why people are so quick to put it on par with first wave Wu Albums, The Infamous, Illmatic, RD, etc. He did have a lot of potential and murked jay z in that 7 minute freestyle so it's a massive shame he died, and I think he coulda made great music or he coulda followed the Puffy bandwagon, who knows.

No one in the 90s even rhymed their asses of close to Big L and Pun until after they came out (definitely not Big L), he had the most consistent smooth rhymes ahead of even G rap. A lot of his punchlines are also very influential to like SSLP and I could see him being the antecedent to like Celph Titled/Diabolic/ Copywrite type rappers, now whether that's a good thing or bad thing is up to you. Also they definitely made great music and had as much personality as Nas, lol. They just didn't have the preponderance of quality songs he did.
