I've listened to his first album - "It's dark and hell is hot". It's a great album. It's a reasonable documentation of his lifestyle as a gang leader with responsibilities. His lyrics are pretty raw -- the Intro and "X is coming". Songs like "Look thru my eyes" show his softer side, and there are conceptual songs ("Damien") as well. And of course the Ruff Ryders anthem. There is a reasonably good variety of songs on the album. Production is good and I really liked the style in which DMX delivers his lyrics -- and the album is almost all DMX (including hooks). And this is one of the few albums that I usually listen from start to finish.

DMX comes off as a really nice guy in a lot of his interviews, but the documentaries I've watched play him out to be a psychotic asshole. It's hard to really like a guy knowing that. I respect his older music.

Don't expect him to come with some lyrically complex shit but he has a lot of heart and does come with some profound stuff sometimes - in between all the barking and growling.
'Look Thru My Eyes', 'Slippin' & 'Damien' are my favourites by him off the top of my head, he's got some solid music tho.

you just described my step father. dude was the fucking devil. and pk, i couldn't disagree more i think he's just as crazy if not more than people think. watch any interview of that dude he's like ready to crawl out of his skin it gives you anxiety just watching him. dude's ready to beat the life out of anybody for anything. doesn't he legit eat dog food?
