WEARING JEWELLERY and clothes the cost of which would rival a rich Jamaican's bank account, and purchasing expensive and exotic cars in the same way the average Joe would buy a pair of shoes, rap superstar Fat Joe defines the word celebrity.
But as much as many Jamaicans are fans of his music, Fat Joe is actually a fan of Jamaica.
"I love Jamaica! I'm from Puerto Rico. Jamaica and Puerto Rico have a Caribbean connection," Joe told The Gleaner.
Born Joseph Cartagena, Fat Joe was in Jamaica recently for the bmobile Back2School concert, held on the August 31, at Jamaica College.
WAITING TO PERFORM
Though performing for the first time in the capital, Joe says he had been waiting to perform in Kingston ever since his last performance at Appleton Temptation Isle in Negril, August 2004.
"It (the Back2School concert) was off the chain ... the kids were great," panted a sweating Fat Joe from the inside of a 2004 Range Rover, right after his concert performance.
The self-described workaholic says he has always been a great fan of Jamaican music, naming his favourite performers as Sizzla, Capleton, Buju Banton, Bounty Killa, Ninja Man, and Supercat. He also expressed a love for reggaeton, which he considers a blend of Jamaican dancehall, and Latino music.
The South Bronx native also mentioned that Buju Banton was one of his closest friends, having known each other for approximately 10 years.
"Buju is my brother! Just like I get mad love here, when Buju wants to escape Jamaica, he comes and chills with the Latinos ... they love him too. When he's there they crowd him so much he can't hardly breathe," laughed Fat Joe, reflecting on times spent in the Bronx.
Though he has only been to the island two times to date, the rapper's crew Terror Squad frequents the island. Female rap artist Remi Ma, performed earlier this year at 'Lady Saw's Birthday Bash.
Cartagena released his sixth album this year titled, All Or Nothing, which included hits like Get It Poppin, and So Much More. The head of Terror Squad is also heavily involved in the film and fashion industry.
Fat Joe describes himself as a Jamaican from another nation, and says that he will be back in the island soon, whether he is performing or not.
"I love my Jamaican fans, and I'm Jamaican at heart. It's in the Caribbean blood," Joe said.
