80% of freestyles are written (my theory)

Postby ,-,'-{Bar}-',-, » Jun 5th, '07, 01:23

any person who freestyles on a show or at a club ect. i beileive are actualy spitting memorized verses, now im not talking about battles, but i truely beileive hardly anything is actually freestyled and straight off the head..

every freestyle ive watched on youtube also seems to be in a track..or most of the ryhmes/punches are in a track

and think if youve been writing for a while you could easily spit an old verse or youve just remembered a sit loads of bars through the years and you sorta just mix and match, i (myself) could easily go out and start "freestyling" a mix and match of verse's i've taken days over writting but just not record them or nothing

im posting this for opinions , and also coz you see alot of people getting alot of credit coz they freestyle amazing verses :sweating:

and also i aint saying spitting bars and stuff youve remembered coz youve wrote them is cheating, whatever floats ya boat ya know

I agree with ya pretty much all around on this one.

Further reading from wikipedia:

There are two kinds of Freestyle rapping: one is scripted (recitation), but having no particular overriding subject matter, the second typically referred to as freestyling or spitting, is the improvisation of rapped lyrics. When freestyling, some rappers inadvertently reuse old lines, or even "cheat" by preparing segments or entire verses in advance. Therefore, freestyles with proven spontaneity are valued above generic, always usable lines. Rappers will often reference places, objects in their immediate setting, or specific (usually demeaning) characteristics of opponents, to prove their authenticity and originality.

yup your right.

Look at eminem he constanly used lines from his tracks.Alot do it though and its rather sad to see.

Its why i prefer battle freestyles ,where they have to respond 'off da head' ,rather then just 'rambling' freestyles wheres its sooo open to just kick up old verses.

well freestyling is really hard, i doubt anyone can freestyle 4 minutes straight, or anyone can but it wouldn't be that good.

Everybody's far too hard on Eminem for doing this, because Eminem has never pretended that they were off the brain, the verses you hear him spit freestyle, are written verses. He even admitted it in his book "Angry BLonde", that verses in "Infinte" the song off the same album, are verses that he used to spit at the Hip-Hop Shop, he said that that's what fans want to hear when you rap, they don't want to hear some "I got a house with a mouse crap", they want to hear your illest shit. And he then made another verse or two for it, because people wanted to hear it as a full track. He does it a lot, and his freestyles on "The WAke Up Show" earned him the award freestyler of the year in '97. And I think Sway and Co, know a little more about freestyle Emceeing than ye.

And like Bar said, 80% of rappers do the same, it's actually probbly a lot higher than that, probably even 100%. Because I've heard you're coveted Proof spit lines that he's recycled from before, that's not a sign of weakness, that's real emceeing, controlling the mic, spitting something you've said before while you think of something new, that's an old trick.

But Eminem does spit off the head too. He has at least 3 very good off the brain freestyles that I can think of. "Just Rhyming Wth Proof", "Rhyming Words" and "Any Word", these are freestyles that are obvious to the listener that they are off the dome freestyles. And listen to the battles at Rap Olympics, all those are off the brain. Okay, in his battle with Juice at Scribble Jam, he might have said a line or two from "I just Don't Give A Fuck", but who's to say that he didn't keep those from the battle for his song, and not the other way around?

There are some great rap off the dome freestylers around link Jin, Wordsworth, etc. But, don't be knocking Eminem, he does it too. And when it comes to spittin pre-written lines, everybody does it, you all just know too much of Eminem's music for him to get away with it.

i fink its true. U can usually tell when its freestyled due 2 complexity, flow etc. Its normal when really freestyling to sometimes go a bit off flow, just listen 2 Common's or sum1 but they still sound good. In rap battles i watch, mainly street battlez from Jumpoff, they usually expose people for writtens and its used as a diss target. The Saurus & Illmaculate are two of the sickest real freestylers, and the UK's are the Free Masons (Respek BA, Whashisface, Possessed & Stig) :smoking:

Killa wrote:its not uncommon for freestyles to include some written lines because its off the head rhyming and your doing it in a continuous motion. what you expect half the rappers to say hold on let me think of where to go from here? i actually havnt heard a freestyle ever that didnt sound like it had full unwritten lines (not one over 1 min anyway)

Yeah man, you're exactly right. That's why it pisses me off to hear people bitchin about EMinems freestyles, just because they've heard every single fuckin track he ever leaked, it's almost impossible for him in a freestyle to spit something that he haasn't said before, well, at least one line or phrase anyway.

On the contrary though, I've some freestyles which are totally off the dome, one is by a rapper called Wordsworth. It's obvious by the simplistic lyrics (FEw multies), and pauses between some lines that he is coming totally raw off the brain, and it's one of the best freestyles I've ever heard, because he basically spits a full conscious rap story right off the top of his head. It's a bit special!

Here it is: http://www.zshare.net/audio/21798647889995/

Enjoy peeps.

Yeah, you don't have the excellent flow and lyrical exhibition like some of the pre-written freestyles, but it's an artform in itself, and should be treated as a seperate thing. It's very impreessive when it's done to this standard.

What did ya think of the track?

IT WAS DECENT IN A STANDARD OF (dam caps) a actual freestyle flowed ok and told a good story (one of the things that make hip hop what it is) obviously it hasnt been written cos the lyrics are standard. i like it as a freestyle its actually pretty nice but if you knew this guy went out and spent time writing etc it wouldnt be that good a track if ya get me.

Yeah, if you were to sit down and try to write this you could do it better and make it more impressive. But to be able to spit a story off the brain like that is amazing. I think he just heard the beat, and went, okay I`m goin in this direction. The beat is aweome too imo, and the reaction from the people in the room when he finishes just makes it all the more juicy, it's one of my faves.

Have you heard Jin's - Choice FM Freestyle?

It's off the dome as well

Yeah, his album isn't very good, was a big disappointment for me, cos in his freestyles and battles, he's pretty amazing.

Check this out anyway, it's awesome, another true hip-hop track, off the dome

I find it funny, sometimes when I'm writing something (which I finally got back into) and I try to just read what I did, I get come cool stuff off the top of my head, but then I try to write it down and Iralready forgot it lol, unless it's like one line I think of. I've seriously done 2 lines, thought they soudned sick, and then been unable to figure it out. Ok, this is barely on topic, but its similar...
