Royce says "flow is more important than subject matter"

One of the major arguements in rap has always been what is more important, having a dope flow or having great subject matter? Well now Slaughterhouse member, and one of the number 3 top "underrrated" mcs by Paul Rosenberg (Eminem's manager and Shady Records President) is taking on the question.

Royce explains, in an interview taken from the book "How To Rap: The Art & Science of the Hip-Hop MC"," 5'9 tells why he thinks flow can be more important than subject matter in the rap game.

The best subject matter is almost nothing without a good flow.

So I agree with G, Wic and Cole, both are equally important.

I cant listen to a song with good subject matter but horrible flow but I can enjoy listening to a song with crap subject matter but a great flow.

Obviously, having them both is most important but if I had to choose...

If I had to pick one I'd say flow so yeah. In essence I agree with Royce. But that doesn't mean an album can be a masterpiece just if it has amazing flows and shit subject matter.

But... Like how Em can rap about the most ridiculous shit (cite: Taking My Ball) and make it sound awesome, addictive and cool as fuck. That shows why flow edges over it. It's definitely supremely important and nobody has mastered as many or as well as Em IMO.

I agree both are neccessary, but flow can have the edge. I can listen to songs with shit that has been said before and can still love it if the flow's sick.

I agree. Relapse was an example. Subject sucked but lyrics and flow made it listenable. Biggie Smalls is one of the greatest because he had the street rapper subject matter and AN AMAZING FLOW.

I wouldn't say the subject-matter of Relapse sucked.

With Eminem so quick and racey I wouldn't wanna hear him rapping like that about his emotions. Hearing him speeding through muderous descriptions in grave detail was much more engrossing.
