Actually I associate the New School with anything 2000 and up

The entire decade of the 90's music wise in all genre's was the best of any other era...

oldskool didnt die with pac and biggie it was def still alive after they passed
there is still a difference between oldskool assin ATCQ and lords of the underground
or the oldksool classics that people like DMX made in '97..'98
i personally feel that hiphop lost its awesomeness and true meaning around the 2001 mark
then it really started to only be about money ho's and cars..and just making quick hits
whereas before biggie could make a song about money but it would still be a story..instead of just naming how much ur pinky ring or ur new batman chain costs and do alil dance with it

Well as time passes the change from Old School to New School eventually has to move forward too I suppose. I used to call Old School what was before 1990 but that's obviously changed now and I started to call it what was before 1997. I'm not sure anymore though.

As soon as Puff Dady came into the game it changed completely, he was the one that started the shiny suits era

Don't believe me, ask Michael

You see Biggie, see Pac, see success and its outcome

I agree with Sticcy. New school started when the new millenium begun. Although, I would classify it as when they switched up the sounds of the beats. So, you got to look for the year where these new-kind of beats got popular. That would be the year that New School started. I think.

i dont fully agree with that :-k cuz oldskool hiphop has its own kind of style..
both kool moe dee and LL Cool J are oldskool eventhough KMD "complained" about him
in 10 years from now u cant say soulja boi or joe budden is oldskool just because its from 10 years ago
it was a certain style..def an era..what came after 2000 wont ever become oldskool hiphop :-k

i never said it didnt live
but ur turning this into a: "hiphop will always change so 20 years from now people will listen to eminem as an "older" rapper from back in the day..so then those people will be the new skool looking back at "eminem" being the oldskool"
but oldskool has nothing todo with time passing by..it has nothing todo with the word "old"
its a certain style of music.. that only laster for a few years
and fa-Q asked when it died..thats all

I've looked it up, g-funk was the start of new school. Which means that rappers such as Pac and BIG are new school rappers, LL Cool J, Run DMC, are also new school rappers. KRS-One is also a new school rapper. Every rapper that started to rap in the early 90's is a new school rapper. West Coast music, such as Gangsta rap is also new school rap.
