what exactly is a layover?

what exactly is a layover?

Postby Ticalrecords » Dec 9th, '12, 22:41

this is prolly a real ignorant question, considering i been recording for over a year :facepalm , but it was suggested to me (multiple times) that i should use layovers in my vocals. I tried looking it up on the internet and couldn't find an article about what it/they are. could someone please explain to me what a layover is? it sounded to me like yall were talking about adding an extra vocal track - but i think thats called dubbing right? fuck it, if someone could clear up this confusion it be very helpful

thanks :D

An overlay is dubbing only specific parts for emphasis in the vocals. I figure dubbing is recording the entire thing again so you have a 2nd layer.
