It pains me to see such elementary comments on such a magnificent discovery such as this. Even in it's early stages, the fact that we've found a planet that's so close to being Earth-like is astounding, and all you guys can think of is "I wonder if NASA has watched me jerk it?". Pathetic, to be honest. How can you NOT love this stuff?

It would take 600 years to get there assuming we could have a space craft that can manage to travel at the speed of light for 600 years and somehow get a crew that can, as Hesky said, sustain generations of life without inbred breeding and some how inherit the knowledge of using the ship. It's stupid to really put this out there, we won't find out much from it 600 light years away and every member that posted in this topic will be dead before legitimate news comes out on this.

Agree on most of the points that you said. The Major concern is that we are having Images that are 600 Years Old, by now the Planet and so called existing inhabitants(If any) might have gone through various stages of evolution and might have advanced in various aspects of survival and physical features. We also don't the exact stage that they are now, maybe that planet might advanced life forms that are more intelligent than us. But what's the use, the Planet is so far away that it will take years to communicate with them Via. Radio waves let alone travelling to that place.

The only thing that can be salvaged out of this discovery is that Earth is not the only Planet in the whole universe to hold and sustain life, which is pretty much obvious. This will remain as a mere fantasy for the Astrologers and Scientist, also a new chapter in the books of school kids.

@Atone - I don't have any sisters, and my mom is my mom. I have female friends not related to me (although we are ALL related in an evolutionary sense!). I'd rather be out there exploring the stars than be interacting with ANY human, male or female. I guess we all have our different loves.

The chances of LIFE, as in, just life of some kind on another planet somewhere I think is probably likely. Given the scope of the Universe and the fact life can arise in habitable conditions...

However, the chances of intelligent life (such as us) may be very unlikely indeed. The genetic processes involved to coming where we are now are akin to mini miracles.

It's funny how just because the planet is habitable people probably already assume there's a civilization of aliens there when in reality, scientists are just wondering if there's bacteria.
