I have another theory: back when the giant ice meteor broke apart the super-continent into multiple continents (essentially filling our planet with water, and knocking us off our course a bit to give us seasons) inside was some sort of ? that will emerge when the planet gets polluted enough, and will kill us all.

No but for instance, they could examine each character in communication, so if a plant releases a certain toxin or behaves a certain way, that could be a particular word and so we would follow those patterns.

They already figured out the alarm signals they send out to other plants when pests are around, so maybe taking that a step further.
