lol...Why do people call Eminem so "mainstream" now?

He's the highest selling rapper of all time, he's also the most mainstream rapper of all time. He was before and still is after this album came out.

If you think it's because it has Rihanna, Wayne, and Pink on it..

Pink and him have always had similar backgrounds. It's a shame the song didn't have an actual meaning, but I'm actually surprised this colab didn't happen years ago.

Rihanna? Well, I can't believe she eve did the song. First of all it seems to reference domestic violence often, and we all know what happened to her because of Chris Brown. And while Em seems to stick up for "Women's" rights and not hitting "Women", at the end of the song he throws it all out the window and says he is a liar and will tie the bitch down to a bed and set the house on fire. LMFAO, Rihanna kinda got raped by doing this song IMO.

And Wayne? He isn't doing this because he's "selling out", I believe he has done songs with Wayne because in the years Em was gone (04-09) Wayne took over as the hottest in the game. Em clearly has shown how much better he is than anyone that has been around in the game while he was gone.

Because they're retards who have no idea what they're implying.

Eminem can't help how big he gets or how many people like him. So in terms of his popularity, he is mainstream. But so is Dr. Dre, Ice Cube and Snoop Dogg. Anybody who is known Worldwide, signed to a label and consistently sells truckloads of records is mainstream.

But Eminem is not mainstream in his intent or his art. He has always and continues to say exactly what the fuck he likes, however the fuck he wants to say it. For example, a lot of people called "Not Afraid" mainstream... Right, when in the first verse alone he mentions fucking the entire UNIVERSE with his cock.

What they're trying to say is he's commercial / sold-out. But they think this simply because he gets better at arranging / presenting his music, it sounds more polished and because he's in the public psyche a lot. But Eminem has never, ever, ever sold out his artistic principles.

He's still an absolute true, individualist, unique artist.

They say his more mainstream because his doing way different music, meaning not rapping about serial-killer shit, Em was way more mainstream back in 02-03 then know. But those people can think whatever, it doesn't really matter because Em will keep putting out music whether they like it or not.

To be honest I don't think I could have taken another album of fantasy serial bullshit again, Relapse was amazing lyrically but the content made it so old, so fast IMO. It was just too.....I don't know, unconnected to Eminem's personality. (Sure, you can say he's been crazy his whole career, but he never made nearly every song a fantasy song. There was only a few realistic, true to Em songs on all of Relapse like Beautiful)

^ In what way is the fucking Balls song with D12 a compromise in his artistic integrity lmfao.

That song is pure Eminem. It's zany, it's ridiculous and it's crammed with his personality and usual nonsense. Just because you think the song is crap or silly doesn't make it a sell-out song. It's still totally Eminem / D12. Not a valid example.

I'm talking selling out his principles, becoming a different artist. No longer sounding like Eminem, therefore clearly a forced compromise = has never done this.

PS. In-case anybody thinks of the Akon song - Not a valid example either. Akon is Em's friend, he did the song and left him a 16, Em probably didn't even get paid and what's he meant to say to a friend "sorry man you're too cheesy". Plus he was still Eminem on that track and it's not his music.

So still waiting on just one example of Em compromising his artistry. I've listened to the man for a decade and can't think of one.

There's a difference between being mainstream and selling out. Mainstream just means your music appeals to a large audience.

This one's simple to explain: Rihanna doesn't give a single shit, she will do anything in order to get some more money, airplay, fame and men drooling over her. It's not like she writes any of her songs in the first place. Music to her aint meaningful lol, it's just something she does for the benefits.

As for the other points i agree, I mean it's not like Dr. Dre & Snoop Dogg were exactly underground, and his first mainstream performance was with them! People are complaining that he's mainstream probably because in the year 2010 he can't carry on making songs with Xzibit, Snoop Dogg, D12 and Obie alone. The pop music landscape has become so shitty that if he did, he'd probably sell about half what he has; people are idiots now and need a famous name like Rihanna or GaGa on at least one song before they will even listen to it. Girls especially.

Plus, he's always been very popular and mainstream pretty much throughout his career; while he is one of the rare examples of a true talent getting the recognition deserved, the fact remains that he's been number one for pretty much all his releases, something that equates to popularity, which is inflicted by being mainstream. Fact of the matter is, if he wasn't brought into the mainstream, none of us would even be here and this site wouldn't even exist in the first place.

for fuck's sake that fits perfectly well with the whole idea of the song and is part of what makes it so powerful. Rihanna knew what she was doing. Goddamn it.
