I thought that was the stupidest thing I'd ever heard of when people were making a big deal out of that. It's not a sign of weakness, it's a sign of respect--and in other cultures, it's not a submission-type of deal like it would be perceived here. Beyond that, other presidents, republican and democrat have done the same. Just my take.
Obama has done great on some things, bad on others. He tries to be bipartisan, when it's obviously hurting him more than helping him. Fuck the republican dogs, he should've passed Universal Healthcare before Ted Kennedy died. Instead, they dicked around and passed a plan that doesn't change nearly enough of the rules for insurance companies.
Drug reform has been promising. The crack/powder cocaine sentencing disparity was finally taken revoked--which was an absolute disgusting way to target the lower class. 5 grams of crack cocaine (which is part baking soda anyway) carrying a sentence equatable to 500 grams of pure powder cocaine? Ridiculous. That, along with the ban on needle exchange programs in DC being revoked, and the medical marijuana law finally being allowed were great things achieved by the president, and congress.
The Patriot Act continuation and expansion, coupled with the handling of this war in Afghanistan--which will last for at least another 10 years under the current strategy, if done correctly--are very disheartening, in my eyes.
The handling of the economic collapse was...I'm not going to comment on it, as it's not something I've studied enough to know about. I'm not particularly pleased, but I do believe that it would've been worse with McCain for sure.
As far as the Tea Party movement, and the Republicans capitalizing off of it, I sincerely hope they don't get some fucking crackpot under the GOP bill, which is exactly what the Tea Party has been churning out. It's full of Glen Beck fans, who believe that Obama is the AntiChrist/Foreign Born/Leader of the NWO/Communist. No, he's a politician. The hope they put in their radical candidates is just as misplaced as liberals hoping for Obama to be their savior.
Obama should've denounced that whole ACORN scandal, and I'm referring to the loss of it's federal funding and eventual demise. The "evidence" that was brought against them was a fucking farce, and they were later proven innocent of any wrong-doing. The fact is, many of the workers called the police, none of them actually helped the "pimp", and any evidence in the videos to the contrary were clearly in jest, because it looked like a prank.
Obama is fucked, either way though. He was voted in by an enthusiastic base that has been nothing but disappointed in him, even though he has been the most liberal president in a long time. His only hope is if Palin runs under the Tea Party, against the GOP and the Democrats, splitting the Conservative vote, and ushering in a victory for the democrats.
The fact is this--it would've been worse under another 4 years of GOP leadership, and the progress that has been done most certainly wouldn't have. The only possible way I would've been happy with the GOP is if Ron Paul perhaps got the coverage he deserved. Fox News shunned him though, and he was left behind people that had less support than him.
In any case, I'm not happy with the Democrats, and I'm not happy with the GOP. They're both dogs, for the most part. A third party is needed, but it certainly shouldn't be the Tea Party movement, as it's too rooted in racism and ultra-conservative pipe dreams. Canada is where it's at, my friends.
This will probably be the most typing I do in this thread. As some of you may have noticed, I haven't been on recently due to obligations in real life. Carry on, but don't expect me to reply, as this is the first time I've been on in about a month or so I believe.
