The production on Relapse

Postby CLV22798 » Nov 7th, '10, 19:13

If there's one thing I can't complain about Relapse is the production on the album. When I listened to Relapse, I started wondering how Eminem in his prime would have sounded over the beats that Dre produced. To me, the production on the album sounded like something that would have came out in the late 90's or early 00's. I think Eminem in his prime would have killed the production on Relapse. This is the opposite of what I thought with Recovery, where I felt like he flowed really good with the production on there. But that's another conversation for another day. My question is how do you think Relapse would have turned out if it would of came out when Eminem was in his prime?

Relapse production is great, for the most part.

But no way he Dre the best of all-time. He's loud, crisp and quality, but he's so uncreative in comparison to somebody like Kanye.

Kanye constantly keeps it moving, expanding and experimenting. Dre pretty much does the same shit every time, changes the mood / tone etc. but sticks to a formula.

I really wouldn't say that at all.

There's a perception amongst a lot that he can't rap or that, his rapping could do a lot of work. Well, yeah he could improve a lot but at the same time, he's by no means shit.

His rapping on this for example...

I think is very good.

He's got a lot of character, a fairly good flow and is a decent-enough lyricist. He comes out with some good lines, like "for me giving up is way harder than trying".

I agree with Francesco, Dre, for me, is a better producer than Kanye
Thats not to say Kanye is bad, the guy is a genius, but Dre from the late 80s-early 90s was unbelievable, and then when you add on his 2001 album, his work with Em, 50, The Game, etc, the guy has been ridiculously consistent and versitile for over 20 years............
BUT, Kanye is also consistent and versitle, plus I think his production is improving with every album, oh the beat off "BE" is probably the most beautiful beat I've ever heard, so for me it is close

RZA is the best hip hop producer ever though, in my opinion

On topic, I think Relapse had really good production, beats like Medicine Ball, Stay Wide Awake and Same Song And Dance are bangers
I think Hello and Must Be The Ganja are underrated production wise too
Plus the clarity of the sound is masterful
Same sword they knight you they gon' good night you with
Sh.., Thats' only half if they like you
That ain't even the half what they might do
Don't believe me, ask Michael
See Martin, see Malcolm
You see Biggie, see Pac, see success and its outcome
See Jesus, see Judas; see Caesar, see Brutus
See success is like suicide
Suicide, it's a suicide
If you succeed, prepare to be crucified

Kanye ain't shit. All he does is sample some old R&B or Soul song and then adds a bass to it.

Wrong!
Kanye is definitely a great producer & a rapper.
Relapse production is great overall too. That I agree.
The rest is wrong all the way.
Dre is the most diverse, and highy considered the greatest producer off all time by most of his peers which is obviously the bar.
He constantly changes trends as he started something new & fresh then with NWA, then totally changed direction with the G-Funk on his solo albums, Snoop's early work, Warren G etc. while his production on other Death Row artists like Pac & The Dog Pound was way different at the same time.
The production of D.O.C.'s 'Noone can do it better' is totally different too and that album is considered one of the greatest albums coming in that era of hip hop. Dre's produced rock/rap beats along Cypress Hlll's DJ Muggs & R&B/Hip hop kinda beats for Eve, Truth Hurts, Gwen Stefani etc.
Reakwon's last album had a few Dre beats that have an East Coast feel all the way, which was amazing.
Totally changed the trend with his newer artists like EM and Busta, while 50's and Game's albums which came after had 100% different feel beat wise overall. Dre always go out of the box & beats tell him what kinda artists he need.
'Bagpipes from Baghdad' shows how he can go way outta the box and still have an original beat.
His production list is out of this world.

I disagree.

I haven't heard every single song he's made but I've heard a span of it and it all sounds very similar to me. Which isn't neccesarily a bad thing, an artist does have a stamp - But I don't feel that he really goes outside of his comfort zone a lot or expands in big ways.

He makes tiny incremental steps in new directions and like with everything else, is sluggish. Where as Kanye just follows his creative instinct and makes giant leaps forward.

I definitely agree Dre is one of the best producers but not the greatest. Yes he introduced G-Funk, we know that, but when you look at Eminem's back-catalog - Majority of Em's best work was produced by him and the Bass Bros, not Dre.
