Rappers who Don't write.

Postby Good For Nothing » Dec 7th, '10, 00:43

People like jay-z, wayne and T.I before the "paper trail" and I'm sure a lot of other rappers have said in the past that they mostly think of and keep ideas for rhymes in their head, instead of putting their ideas/lyrics down on paper.

Now is their any advantage at all of not writing their shit down ? Or is it all about bragging ? " Yo son imma straight spit, i don't need no A4 paper" I mean surely writing would help you craft the song better and the rhyme structure ?

So basically what i want to know is, is there an advantage to not writing in your opinion ?

Edit- Move this to backstage if appropriate :y:

In Em's book, he says that Jay-z comes with 2 lines, says hold on, thinks of something, goes with two other lines or something like that. Is that what you mean?

Yeah i basically mean initially having one or two lines thought up in your head and then building on that in your head again, never really putting pen to paper. Which i think is doing yourself a disadvantage.

Yes. Even if they do there is no advantage to it except maybe their delivery would always seem freestylish. Thinking of lines in the same manner you described Jay doing is just like writing. He's not freestyling. He's just doing a mental form of writing.

It's all bragging rights imo.. and completely useless. I don't ever plan on doing it for the simple fact that I see it as a downfall.

It's better to write your rhymes down. That's why Eminem is 1000 times the rapper that Wayne, Jay, and T.I. (I like T.i., but Em slaughters him as a lyricist) who just keep their rhymes "in their head"

Yeah i noticed as i was typing it out that the rappers who supposedly don't write are not as skilled as ones who do.

There's not an advantage to it no. In fact I can't possibly see (regardless of who you are) how your thoughts / lyrics couldn't be anything other than improved, if properly mulled over on paper. It depends on what works best for your brain though.

But there's nothing impressive or cool about it. I keep seeing people like Jay say they wrote X album in 3 days etc. like it's something to be proud of. That just means you can't give much of a shit about your art if you could write / record an album in that length of time and be happy.

Or even, to be happy with not writing them down and calculating them as much as possible, that just means you're not a perfectionist. It's nothing to brag about, it's something to be ashamed of. It's laziness. Even if you're great without writing, imagine how good you could be with it.

people can't steal ur rhymes if u keep them in your head. that's the only benefit i could see about not writing them really.
