It Costs $200k to Legally Cover Eminem’s “Lose Yourself”

Popular show Glee is known for doing covers of popular songs and performing them within the confines of any given episode. Thought this figure was interesting Via Hollywood Reporter:

Still, even with Glee’s undeniable popularity and selling power, certain artists demand a premium for their songs. “We went after Eminem’s ‘Lose Yourself,’ and it was jaw-droppingly expensive,” Murphy says. “Around $200,000. We couldn’t do it because the episode would’ve been so over budget.”

And that’s why Eminem’s brand is so strong. If you want his music, you pay a premium. If you want a concert ticket, you pay significantly more to see him. I’m not sure what the terms were for a $200k payment, but damn….just to cover an Em song is that much money? I guess they base that on the potential profit the show will make off of advertising? Either way, Crazy.

I didn't found anything strange about that. I mean, why the hell would he want to let people cover that song with less?

Maybe the reason for that price is that he wouldn't even notice if someone would give him 20k for that...
If you have enough money, it is easy to set prices like that.

The songs an absolute classic, if it was anything cheaper, how many covers would we have by now?, new generations would think its a glee song and not an eminem song.

People do covers in rock and roll all the time. Hip hop it's never really been done. I bet it will be popular soon though because rappers already bite and steal from each other as it is. But even in rock and roll covering no one pays crazy money like that, except for a few acts that charge as much or around as Em does.
