Well, it started out as that. And, I honestly had the idea of Twitter right around the time it was created, I literally thought of doing it because I saw how obsessed with status' people on Facebook were, and how they were almost a little entity in themselves...
So I thought, if you could make a site which highlighted and focused on that alone, it could be pretty successful and addictive. But then I thought it was a ridiculous idea and that people would simply just keep using Facebook. Plus I didn't have the coding skills or money to make and market it well enough anyway, so as annoying as it is to see an idea you considered then disregarded, as now one of the biggest online success' - couldn't of done it anyway.
BUT - Twitter has evolved into much more than that now and it's worthy of existence.
It's now become a measurable, record-able social consciousness. The things most people say may not be profound, that interesting or startling but the COLLECTIVE nature of people's thoughts, can be. For example... if an earthquake is happening or about to happen somewhere: people from that area of the world may start tweeting the early signs of it, well well before any national or international news teams pick up on it or are in place to record and cover it...
So it's becoming like an instant, worldwide news coverage of everything, all the time. And due to timezone differences, and the sheer number of people using it, constantly, and the amount of world events and the way countries are becoming more interactive with each other - it's bridging gaps in small ways and, beating a lot of 'official' news outlets to the mark.
Which I like very much. As I consider most 'official' news outlets to be compromised now, particularly in America where all the major outlets are owned or heavily contracted with corporations or government affiliated individuals or organizations. So, there's a constant conflict of interest and reasons to constantly distort stories and information, and if there's ever contrasting views or facts to popular belief, there's a constant underlying favour of bias. A pro-establishment, political agenda, or agendas. In so many ways.
So the Internet, blogs, twitter etc. are all taking the power away from these people and putting it back into the hands of citizens. We're starting to effectively report upon and debate our own news, if something happens somewhere - we can instantly find people from that place reporting on it, as it's actually happening. No longer do we need to rely on a few sources to give us their version or what happened, or their spin.
Which, it's been getting less and less like that for a long time of course but, Twitter is an interesting little phenomenon in itself which emphasizes it. And, we can for example track the most mentioned things in a certain country in a certain crisis and all these interesting little stats which literally show you how large collectives of people are thinking. And, anybody who would be interested enough, could analyze them and see what (if anything) is influencing these thoughts, if there's similarities between... you get the idea. But... it's definitely worthy of being a service in its own right now. Outside of its initial base idea of a FB status.
And @ Emady - In respects to the character limitation, I actually think that's a good thing and wouldn't change that about Twitter. As, if it's unlimited, you essentially just have a web of blogs, and the whole thing may as well not exist as we already have that. They're just not exclusively connected and tracked. But if you set a limit, for everybody - this makes it interesting as people are now forced to condense their expression, and everybody is under the same rule / limit, so regardless of how slow, fast, shorthanded or long-winded you tend to think, you have to abide by it. And that in itself I think is interesting and again forces this collective consciousness to take place.
And, this is coming from a very wordy (obviously) person.
