To be honest, it took me about two listens to get into Relapse. But once I started listening to it, and truly digesting what he was saying, shit. That album is, for the course of a few songs on there, fantastic. Songs like Deja Vu (which to me is easily the best song since his return) and Stay Wide Awake constantly amaze me. And even songs from Recovery have that effect to an extent.
I think the love for Relapse, at least now, is due to hindsight. After five years of being absent in the game, accents and murdering/raping girls was not what people wanted to hear from him. In that regard, Eminem fucked up BIG time. Recovery should have been the first album he released out of his comeback. And not even necessarily Recovery, just an album with that type of material.
Imagine is he puts Recovery out before Relapse. I think it's safe to say that if that is the route he goes, we get Relapse 2 instead of Recovery. Even though there is hints of his Relapse era stuff on Recovery, it's clear that he was changing styles.
Now, in my opinion, Eminem's quality of rapping has dropped since Recovery. Granted, none of this stuff is album material, so in that regard, he gets a pass. He's trying to get his feet under him still, trying to experiment and continue making music. So I'll cut him some slack until that next album drops. But suffice it to say, my expectations for the newest album, if there is one, is slowly dwindling.
