get a good hook?

get a good hook?

Postby Spyder » Dec 3rd, '11, 23:16

i cant seem to mix a nice hook, its a sing songy one
i know i need multiple voices to make it stick out.
i tried overlaying it but sounded corny, so i used echo and or the chorus
effect in Cool Edit and idk nothing seems great.

was wondering if u guys had tips and what u guys do

depends

if its singy, well. first make sure you hit the notes, otherwise only autotune will save you hahaha

then, you want to make sure you use a broad frequency range, have a hook on the bass voices, also on the treble voice, and if you can or have a high pitched voice go for the soprano as-well. I always have them three, well at least most of the times.

I like to use a duet chorus efect on the bass hook and sometimes add a slow or detuning flanger to the treble or soprano to keep the mids resalting and powerfull, and well, make it omnious and mighty as well as melodic.

but try that

thanks man someone finally responded

yeah ive been trying to record one deep voice with one higher voice and play one like an overlay
like Em does but it never seems to sound good when i do it.

so you record three times, or just copy the same verse three times and add diff effects?

haha you NEVER copy and paste the same recording together, always record new layovers.

and I think the problem is that you have volume issues, I think your problem is how you are listening to it. probably have some bad headphones or monitors.

cuz its really not that hard.

keep in mind that your voice has to play the frequency role more than the mixing itself, you dont just record three and eq them as bass, treble, soprano. you actually sing it that way and just polish it with EQ

yea i dont do the copy a verse anymore

i guarantee its not my headphones, i got studio beats lol

and yes thats how i was doing it, i only recorded two though so that may be a problem.
and thats of course when my overlays were off, so the timing off might have made it sound bad as well.
i always recorded bass and soprano, im assuming by a treble you mean like a medium/normal tone right?

yeah, (that's only vocal-wise tho)

but yeah, just keep at it, and eventually you'll get the hang of things.

btw, I also use Studio Beats, but I never use them for my final mix. You should do the same, do all the cleaning and pre-mixes with them on and then adjust the post-mixing settings using your monitors (if you have some good ones). It will sound way better.

something i do sometimes is record once, higher pitched, pan it a little to the left, again higher pitched, pan a little to the right. then one lower pithed centered. it sounds cool sometimes
