Hot 100 News: Billboard and Nielsen Add YouTube Video Streaming to Platforms

Data enhances Hot 100 and other Billboard charts to reflect online video activity

Billboard and Nielsen announced today the addition of U.S. YouTube video streaming data to its platforms, which includes an update to the methodology for the Billboard Hot 100, the preeminent singles chart.

The YouTube streaming data is now factored into the chart's ranking, enhancing a formula that includes Nielsen's digital download track sales and physical singles sales; as well as terrestrial radio airplay, on-demand audio streaming, and online radio streaming, also tracked by Nielsen.

Billboard is now incorporating all official videos on YouTube captured by Nielsen's streaming measurement, including Vevo on YouTube, and user-generated clips that utilize authorized audio into the Hot 100 and the Hot 100 formula-based genre charts – Hot Country Songs, Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs, R&B Songs, Rap Songs, Hot Latin Songs, Hot Rock Songs and Dance/Electronic Songs – to further reflect the divergent platforms for music consumption in today's world.

The most notable YouTube-influenced title this week is viral sensation "Harlem Shake" by producer Baauer, which debuts at No. 1 on both the Hot 100 and Streaming Songs charts and jumps 12-1 on Dance/Electronic Songs with 103 million views, according to YouTube. According to Nielsen, the "Harlem Shake" arrival also benefits from viral video-influenced sales of 262,000 downloads. That sales sum alone, good for a No. 3 ranking on Hot Digital Songs, would have placed the track within the top 15 on the Hot 100 without the inclusion of YouTube streams into the calculation.

Other YouTube-influenced highlights on the Hot 100 include Rihanna's "Stay" which jumps 57-3 and Drake's "Started From the Bottom" which soars 63-10. Videos for both songs were posted on YouTube during the tracking week, with Rihanna's title garnering 3.8 million views in the U.S. and Drake's "Started" earning 5.1 million. In addition, perennial YouTube favorite PSY rebounds 48-26 on the Hot 100 with "Gangnam Style" which adds another 3.7 million streams this week to its already impressive streaming total.

The inclusion of YouTube streaming data comes nearly one year after Billboard and Nielsen launched the On-Demand Songs chart and added streaming data from leading on-demand subscription services such as Spotify, Muve Music, Rhapsody, Slacker, Rdio and Xbox Music to its chart and tracking offerings.

In addition, YouTube data will also contribute to Billboard's Streaming Songs chart, launched last month, which blends all of the available streaming sources into one ranking.

The updated Hot 100, Hot 100-based genre charts and Streaming Songs chart will be available on Billboard.com tomorrow morning (February 21).´

Damn that would've helped EM & 50 so much, they are killing YouTube!!! The good thing about it is, now videos will be more important to the charts & artist will be kinda forced to make more. 50 esp. could have benefited from this 'cuz he make lots of videos.
I'm exited about this!

Yeah that's the unique part of Em's charisma, albums keep going & keep dragging the old ones too. I really can't wait for the new one to see how much he's gonna have in Top 200 what is gonna be the total of all albums that first week.

His new album will sell extremely well!
I wanted an album so rugged nobody could touch it.
Spent a million a track and went over my budget.
Now how in the fuck am I supposed to get out of debt?
I can't rap anymore, I just murdered the alphabet.

Nah Em's never gonna get a millie first week again, it's true he gets waves of new fans after every next album but him been past 40 now means he can't connect to the masses of buyers (10 to 14 years olds) nowadays like he use to do. Realistically he could still do up to 850k nowadays though, which would still be phenomenal actually, esp. as the rest of his albums are gonna be moving digits that weeks as well.
The really exiting thing is gonna be how much all his albums are gonna do in total that first week of the release of his next one.

Even after Relapse , many of his fans were dissapointed , still Recovery managed to sell 741 k , and gained a ton of fans like you said , just with his Facebook page it could be huge promo . With a good single that will get his fans back , he could easily push 1mil+ if it is promoted well with a good single

''Relapse'' sold pretty good for a comeback album, esp. the comeback EM was doing at the time. ''Recovery'' had monumental buzz & people were expecting it like EM was gonna prove he's the Big foot on it so it's not like it came outta nowhere. I do expect his next album to sell better than ''Recovery'' just that it won't be with that much. If you think EM could EASILY move a millie first week, that's fine but honestly I don't think this is possible at all. I predict anything near 850k but only if he's got strong first single for a starter.

EM's albums hype up people to the full & the buzz explodes so the not so good promotion I expect from Interscope again won't be really decisive as it's with other hip-hop artists on the label. His charisma always do it for him if we talk about sales.

The big minus EM always had is he represents one of the poorest cities in America in a part in America where hip-hop is nowhere as near popular commercially as it's in the South, or the West or East coasts. Sadly EM gets very little support commercially out of Detroit/MidWest comparing to what other rappers get out of their cities/areas. Still not decisive for a rapper from the caliber of EM, but a big minus indeed esp. for the first week when it's a lot about the buzz. IMO If Em was from NY, LA or Atlanta with the buzz he creates he could have moved up to half a mill locally every time he came hard.

Then again we could never be sure before we hear the first single anyway, so we will see what's up with that too.
